  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tornado is too fast for RED One

Actually, if you look at the ground and the horizon, the photograph isn't level, so everything is already "leaning" to the left.

Rolling shutter exacerbates that.

I have to say that given the subject, a fighter aircraft, I'm very happy with that level of rolling shutter artifact and overall system performance. If that's all the artifacting I get on a Tornado, then I'll probably be fine shooting a walk and talk don't you think?

The flip side is that if you are hiring me to shoot aircraft, or other very fast subjects, I'll recommend using a camera system with a global shutter.

Please don`t get me too wrong. I´m not complaining on the rolling shutter effect of the RED. This extrem example just shows the "the end of the flagpole". I made other shots from the same position with (slower) passenger aircarfts where the effect is nearly not noticeable. And don`t forget: This is a still!

Cheers

Thomas.

Don't worry about me, its entirely possible I lost my sense of humor during my last shoot.

You know, I had an epiphany today. Our eyes have a rolling shutter!

Ok, everyone knows that if you hold a pencil with two finger in the middle and move it up and down it gives the illusion that its a rubber pencil. Well that sounds like rolling shutter to me.

I was bored at work today and I was pretty amazed by this discovery.

Not to ruin your excitement but if you are panning with the plane, you may as well be shooting a plane standing still as far as rolling shutter is concerned.

That's not a Tornado.

Nor is it a Typhoon.

It's actually a Griffin.
