  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

i really like the AMA r3d editing experience, but having on the machine only 4 GB of RAM, avid mc is getting trouble with low memory while handling r3d files. but that is totally normal. (5 open bins, 2 minute timeline, 4k files)

so the question is, can avid MC work with more than 4 GB RAM (is it a true 64 bit app?) or is the program limited to use only 4GB RAM.
does somebody tested on a well equipped tower a long timeline with the AMA workflow (maybe someone did load an old project into MC5 and relinked to the original r3d files to test)?

i just want to know if its even technically possible to edit longform projects with AMA linked r3d files or if it is usefull only for short projects, while the long ones need the dnxhd files.

If you are using a 32-bit operating system, with 4GB or more installed (the OS won't recognise more than 4GB), the OS will allow a maximum of 3.5GB of RAM for the application.
If you are using a 64-bit operating systems with 6GB or more installed, the OS will allow the application a full 4GB of RAM (so at least 25% more RAM), as it will be able to use other RAM for itself.

When I was on XP32 with 4GB, I had memory issues on complex longform sequences. I switche to Vista64 with 8GB, and never had similar issues ever again.

I haven't tried native R3D for longform, but I would not recommend it. For one, if you need to export or render anything, it will take a long time (all debayering will have to be done at that stage).

so MC itself is not capable of using the 64 bit architecture in its full glory?
if so, the AMA seems to be usesable for commercials only and not for longform since AMA and r3d files are a RAM hungry combo.
did i get it right?

-a rocket will take care of the rendering, so no problems on that front

Hey Kaya - I'll be installing MC5 this weekend to play on a machine with 12gb RAM.

If you want, send me your project and I'll see if I can duplicate the issues. I'll send you an email.

Until then... MichaelP?

MC is still a 32-bit application.

In my opinion, yes, R3D-AMA is not really suited (yet?) for longform.

Agreed. Still, playing back R3D requires a lot of your system. After a transcode to DNxHD, everything is so much easier on the system. So all it takes is the transcode time at the start. After that, you're enjoying the flexibility of DNxHD for weeks or months.

When I export reels, I do it in Same-As-Source. Much faster than rendering into a codec. All that stuff just goes faster from DNxHD. Backing up your editing media is also much simpler and faster (since DNxHD36 is much smaller).

Not yet, but I HAVE to believe 64-bit version of MC is well on the way.
