A good thing to show to clients:
.

I would be very careful before showinh that to any clients, many would say the 7D was plenty good enough especially if it was cheaper. Many people from TV would prefer the brighter image.....

Yeah, you should definitely color-correct them to match each other before showing them to any clients. And a scene that had a lot of dynamic range would be telling too, especially if you had the MX chip.

That said, it really is like night and day, even reduced to 900 or so pixels wide in my web browser.

colour correction or no, you can immediately see that the 7D is both softer and has some dirty CA and fringing. Although that might be the lens, (try shooting again with the ZF on a R1?)

As soon as you magnify the image within your browser, the 7D has no chance.

Even clients should be able to see that?!?!?

thank you for the test:)
7D is unsharp and unreal in colors - this is the reason we use RED.
Good to be with RED ....

best ones

Not really sure why people compare these 2 cameras. No matter how you look at it. The 7D is a camera that is roughly 1/10th the cost of a Red One, it doesn't shoot as high-res or high quality video as a digital cinema camera. Although it is nice to see the actual visual difference I really don't find it that surprising.

The 7D and Red are both extremely impressive for very different reasons.

That's rather night and day difference John.

andrew -
i dont think anyone finds it surprising. If anyone wants them, i can send you the "camera negative" h264 files, to prove no tom-foolery was involved.

Gosh. I've shot more charts than I ever want to admit to. The Canon 7D charts do look soft so I'll reserve judgment till I've repeated such a test with my hyper stringent set ups – parallel planes, cross polarized illumination...yada yada. HOWEVER, if the test was truly controlled, RED beats the pants off the 7D. Gimmie!
BTW. where in MD you at?

Can we see some that are more in focus?

That's what a Canon looks like in focus. The stuff that usually blows people away are the closeups. Also, when there's no side by side and you're drawn to the lighting and content it's fine. Most Canon stuff on the web is downrezzed which adds apparent sharpness. It feels pretty good at 720P.

Finally, Neat Video and some sharpening goes a long ways to improving a lot of video. 7D benefits greatly.

That is pretty much the asterisk with Canon. The Nip and Tuck.

Crop the bottom left corner out of both originals. Blow the 7D still crop up to the same size as the RED 4K still crop. That will make a big difference.

Michael, it's hard for me take any of your post's serious after seeing you with a pirate avatar and fiddling with dynamic range whilest your kid goes hungry.

Images from the 7d were spot on for focus. we used the 1 for 1 punch in focus assist, locked it off, and had enough depth of field to ensure the entire range of the chart was within focus range by at least a few inches.

When a frame has a lot of high frequency detail, like this, the overall sharpness goes down. thats why the closeups out of canons look nice, only the eyes and lips are really full of sharp detail.

Curious

Curious

I'm curious to see the same comparison but in same field of view
