  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I bought a gtx 480 to run the mercury playback engine and i can say the performance is outstanding. as far as i know the card isnt even supported yet. I made a video depicting my results. I dealt with AVCHD footage to really give it a workout. I built this computer to handle the scarlet footage when it comes out and im pretty sure this comp will handle it with no issue. Next upgrades are 6 more gb ram and raid 0 harddrives.

heres the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lyJxBtQqMg

Hey Jeremy, I saw your reply on youtube. On a test with a GTX 260 and the hack implemented, we've seen up to 3 layers of GPU accelerated effects like color correction or basic 3d. Above the 3rd layer, tested with 5D Mark II footage, any CUDA or GPU effect turns the sequence into red. However, say the 4th or higher layer with 5D footage, or say a title, has just opacity or motion effects (no GPU effects applied), then the sequence remains yellow, and GPU accelerated. I'm wondering if the GTX 285, 470, and 480 has "unlimited" effects accelerated, or whether there's some artificial limit, like the new 5.0.1 patch addresses for the GTX 285.

i couldnt tell u directly. cause i really dont know. but i just tested 9 layers of avchd footage playing back with harsh color correction playing back realtime. this card is a tank. i havent found the limit. i dont think id ever u more than 3-5 layers at a time.

Hi Jeremy,
Have you been able to test any red footage at all for playback? If you don't have any too hand there is the MX footage in Recon you could download and try. It'd be very interesting to see how well it does or doesn't handle it.
Thanks
Paul

EDIT: Here's the thread with the R3D's - http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=42130
Would be great if you could post another Youtube clip illustrating playback on these clips.

Hey I'm at work right now but I will try some more tests tonight. See how it turns out. This is playback of native r3ds right?

so ive been having some issues. i cant even play back one 4.5k r3d file at full res without it stuttering. is this normal? this is With the gpu enabled. even on 1/2 res the the cpu hits 100 percent. same thing on quarter res and so on. on 1/2 res im getting stuttering or slowdowns in playback about 2 seconds into the clip. from clips like this on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xso6CGdsl2c i should have absolutly no issue. does a 4800 quattro really make that much difference? whats goin on here?

Are you sure you started your sequence with the 4.5k 23.976p or 24p settings.
I (with all of the lowest playback settings) was able to get 4.5k playing on a q8200 no MPE.

now u say with all the lowest playback settings. yes thats possible but im looking to get it to playback at full res. or get at least three layers with color correction to play back at at least 1/2 res. and yes ive got the right workflow goin.

I think your issue with Red playback is insufficient system RAM at 6GB. Plus, Adobe recommends a minimum RAID 0 of a pair of 7200 rpm drives for high data rate footage playback...

Adobe's own 64-bit document recommends 32GB of RAM for working with Red 4K footage, which requires a Server or Workstation motherboard...

Maybe somebody out there can confirm this?

So a lack of RAM and slow hardrives are my weakpoint. But I was playing the clips off an ssd. And the RAM usage never spiked during playback. The CPU was always maxed out tho. This is what I don't get. Playing back 9 layers of color corected avchd only brought the CPU usage to 25%. Is one stream of redcode playing back at 1/2 res really that taxing?

it's a combination of 10:1 compression on top of being 4k, and RAW information too. that sir, is a LOT in one little clip. you're gonna need a much more hefty system to handle that kind of real time editing, might just have to turn your playback settings down. You should think about external raid arrays, via esata, or SAS. easier for maintenance and configurations, and running too much off the MOBO can be hazardous at times. you should also max out the ram if you can, adobe recommends min 16 gb of ram for ample play/power.

Crap. With my current mobo i can only fit 12 gb. That external raid array sounds like an Awsome idea. I've got esata off my mobo. Esata can handle the r3ds? I just might have to go and drop some cash on a wicked raid array.

It will certainly give you more options in speed, internal raid 0 is taxing on the mobo, and limits the amount of discs you can have. external raid can give you parity raid 5/6 or if you have ample backups, you can go all out raid 0 and get almost 300 mb/sec off the esata. A enclosure with a built in hardware raid controller does a better job than your mobo too, considering your mobo is already doing so many things for you. Faster discs really should improve r3d playback and edit performance. A lot of it relies on how fast it can read it too.

As for 12 gb of ram, it would be wise just to max that out and leave it be, 12 is a lot too, 16 is just recommended by adobe for top performance. If your not doing ultra heavy visual effects work/compositing and 3d work, you should be solid. The speed of your ram alone makes up for a lot.

Thanks tom. il look into the raid for sure now, knowing it can increase performance so much. il also pick up 6gb more ram shortly. But for now, im only working on projects with AVCHD footage. and this card is rockin it out. Thanks for all the input :)

X58A-UD3R rev 1 and rev 2 supports 24 GB of ram.. you just need to afford it.. 4 GB per slot x 6 slots.. unless you have the old X58-UD3R which have only 4 slots..

I played back RED MX footage on my 920@3.36Ghz with 9600 GT and 12GB of RAM.. played one track fine at 1/2 res with 3 CCs on.. didn't check the CPU usage.. will do next time..

Nope i have the new revision. Ya lol i forgot about the 4gb sticks. Those are mighty expensive and i cant afford those right now. I just ordered 6 gb more to make 12 tho for my system. should help. i can play back one stream just fine at half rez with 3 cc as well BUT it starts jittering a few seconds in. maybe its the 6 gb ram, but the usage isnt spiking during playback. I believe its a problem with my harddrive. the clip is just running off a 7200rpm drive, no raid or anything. what kind of hard drive setup are u using at the moment.
