This morning I was getting a shot of the sky to use as a background plate for a special effects shot that I was compositing. I was shooting at 3K resolution and 24 fps. I was using a Sigma lens with a focal length of just under 40mm and I had it stopped down to f22. When I downloaded the shot, and started looking at it, I thought I saw a bug fly through the frame. Then when I examined it frame by frame, I couldn't believe it! I had a series of, I believe, eight frames in which you could definitely see a rod with the side lobes, and its characteristically weird path that they fly. The thing was apparently moving very fast, and I had the lens focused for infinity, so the images are not as good as some I've seen, but this was a real thrill anyway. Has anyone else out there gotten one of these using your Red One?

I finally was able to post the pictures, but it limits me to five pictures. Unfortunately unless you see the whole sequence, the flight path doesn't look too weird-but if you see the whole thing it really is strange-looking.

ROD PICTURES

ROD PICTURES

I was finally able to get some of the pictures posted-see the first post. I've read the "de-bunking" reports and seen the photos of bugs that appear to look like rods. It seems that the only problem with that explanation is that the multiple exposure of flying insects gives you a rod appearance only when the bug flies in a straight line. A bug that flies in a circle gives a rod that is curved. If you examine photos of rods, they always appear to have straight bodies. So, why don't we see photos of rods that seem to be curved? All the photos of rods are of straight rods. There is something else-the de-bunkers claim that it is just the result of a multiple exposure. If that is so, then why do all the photos taken at various shutter speeds tend to give the rods the same length? Some devices are recording as slow as 1/50 sec. while some still cameras are recording at 1/1000 sec., and the rods pretty much all look several inches long. I'm open to all ideas, but it doesn't seem that the critics have been doing a whole lot of critical thinking.

I have exported eight TIFF HD frames to my desktop. Each one is 8 Megs in size. I'm not sure how to post them to this site. I will have to wait till I get home tomorrow. If someone knows the best way to post them please let me know. In the worst case I can email them to someone and they can post them.

Just make them into max quality Jpgs?

Another thing for the "debunkers" to think about: based on factors such as depth of field, field of view, angular size, and shutter speed, the estimates for the rods' speed is around 100 mph and even faster. They are so fast that it is virtually impossible to see one with the naked eye. No one was even aware of them until people started noticing them in photos. If you think the rods are simply bugs that are captured in multiple exposures, then tell me what kind of bug flies at more that 100 mph. I've seen all kinds of flying bugs and I don't think I've ever seen a bug fly faster than about 40 mph. Everyone has seen lots of flying bugs, but the point is that rods fly so fast that they can't even be seen. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

And seriously, a Red owner who can't convert a tiff to a jpeg? My troll detector is about to go off.

No kidding. Post the JPGs, or PNGs would be even better.

It's easy to think people are just trying to cause trouble on the site these days, but Steven is legit. It's just that some people aren't always so quick on the draw with forums and getting attachments uploaded. Yes, I know it's hard to believe that's the case for those of you such as myself.

I'll take your word for it.

I'll also take a good visual effect any day. Like they say in the netherwebs - pictures or it didn't happen  - just ask around here if you need help converting them (hint: 'save as...').

... but dancing rods ... how cool. I've only played with slow light in stills photography. Take a 30 second exposure of a building on a busy street and watch the people disappear. Nice trick that moths can do it with on film.
