  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5.0.1 Patch adds more layers to GTX285

How many do you get?

That would be amazing...but it says only for DVD retail.

Is there a logical reason for this? Because I bought a downloaded version I can't use it?

Confused!!!

EDIT: They had problems with the digital version but it is now up on the downloads site...Phew!!!

Thanks for the heads up...much appreciated.

FYI in case you werent aware there is a bug fix and update for Onlocation available too.

It appears the 3 layer limit is gone on my 285, I have 9 layers 3K in a 3k RED project, with geometry, CC, drop shadows which play, but as you add layers the playback simply degrades, so you end up on one eighth res. for this many, so I guess it still depends on processor speed, ram and cuda cores etc, but it no longer red lines.

I wish Adobe would add a half decent "render to timeline" function to CS5. I now have say, 5 layers 3k plus some effects which stutter play even in quarter res, despit having a yellow line. So I render a preview f my work area - wow, it makes an mpeg 1920x960 preview, not RED 3k which is my project size, the as you play through the rendered section the images change size. Trying to get a preview render using lossless at the correct aspect ratio always fails - this just doesn't work at all.

New Nvidia driver

New Nvidia driver

All,

There is also a new Nvidia beta driver out that says it now has support for CS5(all cards).

Quote: "Supports the new GPU-accelerated features in Adobe CS5" and a whole bunch of other goodies.

It is the GeForce/ION Release, 256 BETA, 257.15 released on May 24, 2010.

After installing it, I also have about a 10 - 20% increase in framerates on other applications/games.

Cheers

Some testing with the updates

Some testing with the updates

Ok,

I just loaded ten layers, nine 4K and one 2K on the timeline and noticed something interesting.

With one layer loaded, I get the red line and it plays/scrubs in realtime at quarter rez.
With all ten loaded and stacked, I get the yellow line but only for the duration of the
longest clip in the stacking order and the last clip at the top is also playing/scrubbing in realtime at quarter rez.

So either I'm on crack or these updates have really hit a home run.

This sounds wrong... I will take a look... A set of clear steps would really help...

No, there doesn't appear to be any improvement as such with the 5.01 patch and the 285, just no red line any longer, with reduced playback quality as you add layers. I'm still unable to play a single layer of full 3K on a 3K project, just a clean clip, at full res, this with 8 core i7 at 4ghz, raid 0, the cpu's are maxxed out unless I switch to half res, then I have 45% cpu usage. I'm sure acording to Adobe I should get playback "as smoooooth as butter" to quote a well known phrase - this with Mercury enabled captain!

I don't think we state we can play full 3k at full fes.... The software path isn't quick enough... Now if we had some support for hardware that can help... hmmm

well, its still pretty cool, 3 layers of 3K with titles, drop shadows, geometry moves and colour correction at half rez - not bad !

One thing I find strange, when idle, Premiere is using between 12% and 22% CPU, this with the timeline stationary on a blank part of the timeline - I tested another NLE under similar conditions - 0%

I checked that nothing else was running, dropping out of Prem and 0% - odd eh?

Well, I am on crack or at least I need a vacation.

Sorry for my previous post.

I had most of the layers switched off.

So, now I have 5 layers, one background and 4 PIP, no effects.

At one-eight rez, it starts to play realtime and then starts stuttering.

But I'm over the limits of my 2 drive raid-0 and until I remedy that, it's all rather pointless.

Again, I apologize for the insanity.

Im dealing with avchd files mixed in with HDV footage. 3 layers. Color correction transitions and minor cutting. Now i plan on upgrading to scarlet in the near future. Would it make sense for me to just dump my money on a 480 now that its supported? or should i find a 285?

If David McGavran is reading this thread, can you tell me what it is that is required of the Nvidia cards to give GPU-acceleration for CS5? Is it CUDA cores or some other property? I only ask as there does not seem to be a large difference in the specs between the GTX 285 and my GTX 260 and the new Nvidia driver mentioned above suggests "all cards" can support GPU-acceleration. Also my "lowly" GTX 260 has the same number of CUDA cores as the supported FX4800 - namely 192. So is there a chance that this card will also be supported, or is there some other restriction in its specs that make that impossible?

Cheers - Mike.

Others have posted better responses on different boards... The basic is that the cards all have slight differences. The ppro team picks cards that they are interested in fully supporting and the fully tests them and verifies them. They can't handle every boards out there. Poke around in google though you will find more info...

Essentially, the more Cuda cores, the better. It also doesn't hurt to have as much onboard memory (amount of memory on the graphics card) as possible too. The Quadro cards are designed to be Opengl monsters which I don't think has anything to do with the Mercury Engine. However, they do tend to have the largest amount of onboard memory which does help. In any case, the current Quadros are last generation cards so not worth getting unless they're giving them away. The GTX 285's are kind of the sweet spot at this time, but only for $200 or less (I've only seen them on Ebay and they seem to selling for between $250 - $350 used). I just got a GTX 275 for around $200 new with full warranty at Microcenter. It has the same 240 cores as the 285 with slightly less memory. I'm calling it a wash at this point. The 400 series cards look promising but I haven't seen any rave reviews claiming massive improvements over the 275/285 cards so I'm holding off spending anything more until this all shakes out over the next month or so. There is a side benefit to having a card that is good at Opengl, applications like After Effects, Fusion, Nuke etal, and Opengl plugins definitely benefit. So I have seen significant improvements with my 275.

Cheers
