  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple passes Microsoft as world's biggest tech co.

People love investing in Apple though because they are forward thinking.

Like forward thinking with PCI slots, graphic performance, graphic updates, drivers, gamma, etc. ? Feature limiting ? Deliberately postponing available technology already present at competition ?

IMO people love investing in Apple because Apple marketing department does a great job in convincing people that only Apple is forward thinking. Plus it looks good.

I'm not a fan of the white, but I've never seen any computers better looking than than the Mac Pro, iMac and Macbook lines...

As for the white being over and unibody aluminum not far behind, I have to disagree somewhat. There is nothing I hate more than cheap, bulky, plastic construction. I cringe when I pick up most PC notebook systems. OTOH, Apple's sleek unibody design, is both wonderful and far too restrictive. I'm really hoping the next trend will be darkly-colored anodized aluminum and I would like to see more quality aluminum construction from PC makers. It's more environmentally friendly in terms of both manufacturing and disposal and easier to recycle than ABS and other plastics laced with metal parts.

...I never liked white. Give me black, anodized aluminum.

Other companies started to notice the term "design" and "user experience" too, plus the thing with HDMI or e-SATA. ;)

I can't speak for everyone else, but I'll say the main reason I like Apple is because of their OS. For me it works and works well. It's certainly not perfect, but I had more headaches when I was a Windows user.

Second reason I prefer Apple is design. All of the examples above are very nice indeed but I still prefer Apple's take.

Third reason is user interface and layout. To me, it's much more natural & intuitive than Windows.

This is all of course totally subjective. There is no right or wrong.

A lot of us just prefer Apple... and I don't think it's fair to imply that we've been "sold" the idea that Apple's products are great by their amazing marketing department.

That's kind of the same thing as calling someone ignorant or stupid... (I know you didn't say that literally). It just sort of comes off that way. just sayin

I for one am not a zealot and I don't like Kool Aid (to much sugar) : )

That was not implied. Overall user experience and no unnecessary complication, unlike Microsoft, combined with good design and attention to detail had a huge part. Marketing did a good job though.

It shouldn't come off that way. If that is the impression - sorry, not intended.

I'm still mostly on Apple, also just sayin'...

Although those are very nice designs I feel they are for the most part a little over designed to match the look apple achieves, a little too much unnecessary textures, however I do like those Sony designs.

The examples shown above are nice in some ways, but also suffer many of the same criticisms people have regarding Apple's hardware. Too restrictive, too expensive, etc.. I briefly owned a Dell Adamo recently. Terrible product. Screw that, I'll buy a Macbook Air and put Windows 7 on it. I agree with Craig's comment above -- those products are over-designed in many ways. I had high hopes for the Adamo, for PC notebooks I typically go with Dell, they have treated me the best over the years. My current PC notebook is the Studio XPS 16" with the 1080p RGB LED screen. Love it.

As for OS platforms, I'm mostly agnostic. Other than notebooks, I build all my own PCs, even if it's the latest 12-core, liquid-cooled workstation. Which I'm actually planning to do here in a few weeks, I need a new monster PC. So I don't want this to turn into a Mac vs. PC war as it seems like it's starting to. In terms of overall performance and reliability, I prefer OSX and Linux, but I find myself only having one Linux system these days -- it's all about the software. And for graphics performance it's all Windows. My PC's outnumber my 3 Macs, but I still prefer Apple's design for the OS. Perhaps a lot of that still has to do with my unix roots. I couldn't stand using Macs in the past until OSX came along, for many years I cringed every time I had to use one. I appreciate Apples hardware design simplicity over the past few years and overall balance of quality. The short-sighted outlook on expandability drives me insane though. 4 PCIe slots in a pro tower workstation/server is just stupid. I'm buying a new Mac Pro as soon as Apple releases updated models, for no other reason than I need another slot or two for more hardware. Pisses me off. But oh well, I can demote my '08 Mac Pro to be the LTO-4 host, spare system and 8-core render node, oh, wait... I'll still have all 4 slots filled.

The graphics card situation on the Mac is pretty grim. Has been for years and shows little sign of getting better. However, it's hard to really fault Apple here. There is no reason AMD and nVidia don't step up to offer more products. Contrary to popular belief, they can write their own video drivers. I really think it comes down to overall market share and the need to build dual BIOS/EFI support for cards that will work on both Mac and PC platforms. I guess we can always hope.

People like to whine about the cost of Apple systems. Yeah, the Mac Pro is kinda pricey, but it's no worse than an equivalently spec'd Dell or HP workstation when Apple first releases them. The problem is Apple doesn't update pricing as often as the typical PC vendors do. Of course, building your own PC will always be cheaper than a Mac Pro and people like to say that's a big reason they dislike Apple. Well, so what... building your own is cheaper than HP, Dell or most any other too. I guess it wouldn't be as big of a strike against Apple if Apple were to openly release OSX to run on commodity hardware. But that's a whole other can of worms and I fear would lead to OSX becoming more like Windows -- more bloat and extra support code, loss of stability as it strives to accommodate an infinite matrix of peripheral hardware and third-party crap driver software.

Or maybe just maybe Apple provides a solid reliable service and pushes it's brand a hell of a lot better then Microsoft.
Just sayin.
The iphone and ipad certainly don't hurt the ITMS either when you can access and purchase your music on the go.

Uneducated masses.

Apple could bring back the floppy drive and people would get excited.

Yeah right. Just like before Apple blew up several years ago all Windows users were part of the "uneducated masses". Sorry but this is a really really dull argument. it's simply not true.

By the way I'm not a windows hater and I pass no judgment on those who use windows machines, I couldn't care less.

Thing is though,

part of them must be right if anyone that is educated is buying stuff,

the floppy drive is a bit of a stretch, they'd have to give a damn good reason for it, they gave a damn good reason for a touch screen phone, an intel mac etc.

Apple has top to bottom integration of hardware and software since day one. Microsoft is a software company that dabbles in hardware.

Apple recognized the value of media to the end user and made it a central focus of development. Apple has always been about the user experience. Microsoft expects their end users to adapt to their products, Apple adapts their products to the end user.

Apple understands that hardware and software are ONE. Microsoft has never learned this.

These two companies are looking less and less like competitors every day. Apple has become its own industrial sector. Because Microsoft has limited experience in building computing devices, they don't have the brain trust in hardware engineering necessary to compete against Apple across the broad spectrum.

I have a friend who has a Droid phone and he is constantly re-charging the battery. I can go two days without charging my iPhone.
