  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If I finish my film on Scratch, why would I need a RED Rocket?

Hi all. . .

I'll admit it. I'm not sure what advantage having a RED Rocket would be for us since we hire out all of our color correction and deBayering to a gent working on a Scratch system. Am I missing something? What's the real advantage? Or is there one?

Thanks.

Stephen

What it does:

-Render daillies in Real Time
-Playback 4K R3D in Real Time for visual verification

Other than that the card does not interact with any other part of the world.
It would be great if it could be used as an FCP accelerator or in combo with ADOBE or AVID, but I do not think that is quite as simple as me writing this.

If you can handle overnight renders with REDCINE-X edit, then finish in SCRATCH then the "need" for the card is greatly reduced.

It is perfect for high volume production environments.

There are a few possible advantages to using a REDRocket, even if you know will also be "going back" to the RAW files later...

Depending on your specific workflow, these advantages might be:

- FAST (realtime) dailies transcodes to a Quicktime or Avid codec for offline editing

(keep in mind, a REDRocket "full quality" hardware-accelorated debayer will still be faster than a half-res, or even possibly quarter-res 'software-only' debayer

- Automated audio-sync of dailies

- Re-framing, cropping, scaling, applying best-light looks, etc. to dailies

Then there's also the advantages of having a REDRocket system on-set:

- 2k or 4k playback w/ audio

- DP and client can set up and / or approve looks for dailies transcodes or save RED metadata for color grading later

Those are just a few of the many invaluable uses off the top of my head... I hope this is helpful to you!

Best,

- Jordan

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Given our film workflow: 1) Edit proxy files and 2) send the EDL out to Scratch, it just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for us at this time.

If I recall our old benchmarks, on an 8 core machine you can do 1/4 res offlines significantly faster than realtime in software.

Does that mean if i am using 8 core machine I dont need Red Rocket.

No. If you want full quality decodes in sensible time you're better off buying a Rocket. If you don't care about how long full quality decodes take, no worries!
