Is this a Bad time to purchase Red1.
Please list out points both positive and negative. With Scarlet around the corner and with some amazing capabilities why should I still opt for Red1.

It basically comes down to this: if you absolutely need to own a camera right now, then the Scarlet and Epic are not available and you have to choose something else (like the Red).

And if you don't absolutely need to own a camera right now (let's say you can rent or borrow, or live with your older camera or a cheaper camera), then wait as long as you can and get the best camera you can afford once you need to buy something.

There is no trade in cedit for stage 4. Only stage 2 & 3.

If you need a camera now there are several used Red Ones for sale at a pretty good discount. Some you can trade-in on Epic or Scarlet, some you cant. Or you can buy a new Red One, but you can't trade in on Epic or Scarlet.

What is the fair price for preowned R1, with and without MX.
Will the used ones be just as good enough.
Can someone please provide a check list to follow before purchasing a used R1.

With MX it looks like it goes in th 17.5k region (like a new R1), without, remove the upgrade price. What you get of extras vary immensly. M bodies have gone down towards 10k, but I think the market for them is better now.

Jay A. Kelly had a fully tricked out M package going for around 19k$ if memory serves me. That was an absolute steal!

Ensure that you transfer the ownership and pay RED the 750$ ownership transfer fee.

This way the camera goes to RED and is inspected and approved "before" it comes to you.

Make this a condition of your sale stating that the current owner is responsible for shipping the camera to RED and they are responsible if the camera requires any repairs.

You then pay the shipping from RED to you.

To my knowledge, this is dead wrong. At RED Day in Los Angeles, in direct conversation with Jarred, he said I could buy a RED One immediately (this was Feb, 2010) and get full credit toward an Epic when it became available to me. In a very light-hearted way, he was actually prodding me to do it. I suppose it is possible that I misunderstood or that things have changed - always do your own homework - but I believe Ketch is right about having the option to buy a RED One now and get full credit toward Epic. Of course, you'll have a bit of a wait until all current owners' needs are met.

Buy a plane ticket and fly out to the buyer. Also, if memory serves me, Red has a program that allows you to get the Red RE-Certified by them for $500. Transfer of ownership with a full Red inspection.

Epic stage 4 is full price

i am pretty sure you had to buy a new Red One before like Nov to be elegible for stage 2 or 3.

You can still trade your Red One, bought after the cutoff date, for the $17500 against the Epic S35. Its the brain only, not the Epic-X bundle however.

I was unsure, as the big graphic outlining the stages in the October 30th thread doesn't mention a trade-in for recent Red One customers in stage 4, however back on Oct. 30th Jim wrote in the same thread :

Anyone who buys a new RED ONE or a used RED ONE and transfers ownership after yesterday... will be able to trade it in for $17,500 credit on an EPIC-S35 Brain ONLY "

I just missed the October date and wanted to clarify that this was definitely correct and my local UK Red guy (Alan Piper at Red Pinewood) has confirmed it for me.

Obviously its not quite such an amazing deal as for longer standing customers, but still makes the decision to buy a Red One today a lot easier.

Yes, this is absolutely true. You would not be in Stage 2 or 3. You will not get any modules or accessories.

But this does not address the issue of any trade-in value of a newly purchased RED ONE against a new Epic. Yes, you would definitely be behind all prior owners in the queue to get your Epic but, if you are really serious about wanting a RED now and an Epic when they are available to you, I'd check directly with RED. What do you lose by checking?

I apologize in advance if it turns out I misinterpreted Jarred when we spoke. I am just saying that if I were in the position to spend $17,500 on a RED now, knowing I ultimately wanted and Epic, I'd check it out.

EDIT: Looks like John has a better memory, better research skills and is a faster typist!!

Interesting. I remembered that there was $0 trade on Reds bought after Oct 30. I rember having conversations with a couple guys who were happy they had bought their Reds before the cut-off. Guess i rembered wrong.

Ha! Sorry Terry :) As you can imagine, having decided to purchase my Red about five minutes after the 'cutoff' point, this issue is right at the front of my mind

It was the perfect time for me to buy an R1!
I just received it last week (thanks again Stacey!) and will be shooting next week.
I was waiting for Scarlet, but couldn't wait any longer.
I thought about getting an EX1, but wanted a RED.
I figure if it can shoot big time Hollywood movies, it can shoot my humble movies for years to come.
And, I got a KILLER deal on an executed R1 kit (again, thanks Stacey!!!).
