Brian Valente of RedrockMicro was nice enough to meet up with me today to test out what I've been trying to make work for a few weeks now. Namely, adapting my Canon 7D/5D to work with my current high end Red accessories. I wanted to get a Canon onto a Mantis Rig so I could keep that same comfort level I was used to getting and also so I didn't have to shell out a bunch of cash on another dslr rig.

It works!

Parts used:

Canon 7D
Nikon 17-35 lens + Duclos gear
ET Mantis Rig
19mm ET Bridgeplate
19mm ET Rods
RedrockMicro Omnimount
RedrockMicro dSLR baseplate
RedrockMicro Top Handle
RedrockMicro batteryplate back
RedrockMicro Mattebox
ARRI FF-4

Eventually I'll add a Bogen Nano Clamp + Noga Arm + Marshall 7" HDMI.

I'd say around 10-15 lb loaded up. It's pretty front heavy. That's why we added the balance plate in the back for a battery or weights or whatever you need. Brian actually put a sandbag on the back and it felt quite nice but def added to the overall weight.

what?!!!

what?!!!

I must say I'm disappointed Rick- I thought you knew better...

All that means is that you wasting your money and time on ergonomic disaster. I thought you knew better, in fact I know you know better. I'll explain to you how to do it properly in due time, at Cine Gear if I don't see you before then....

Shoulder pad?

Shoulder pad?

I'm working on a shoulder rig as well. Wondered if any of you guys know a good source for shoulder pads?

My problem is that I like to use my 7D in MANY different configurations, so I am trying to come up with solutions for FAST changing.

So far, I use the Manfrotto quick release plates on each rig. This way I can move from my Blackbird Stabilizer to my tripod, to my monopod, to my slider, and then finally to my handheld rig that has a follow focus.

So far, it's not totally smooth, but I am getting there. The next step will be a shoulder mount like this.
