Working on a very dialogue heavy pilot in Atlanta and during one of the last takes (which was very long) the camera said it was "posting" to the drive for quite a long time. Eventually we had to turn it off and ended up losing the footage. Should we have waited longer? Is this a normal process for long takes?

Real name, please.

How long a take and how long "posting" are you talking about?

Basically, posting is creating the quicktime proxies. You can turn off proxie creation in-camera, and re-create these for example in Clipfinder.

When you say you lost the footage - are you saying nothing was recorded to the harddisk? There should be a couple of .R3D files in the last folder, all but the last one being 2.0 GB.

If that is not the case, you should give RED Undead (free download from http://red.com/support) a try.

I'm just doing download so I wasn't on set when it actually happened. I'm not sure how long they allowed the "posting" to go on before they turned the camera off. The last scene they shot was not on the drive. They were able to reshoot pretty easily so it wasn't a big deal this time but we have 2 and half more weeks to go.

The last file has one .R3D file but it's only 4 kb.

same problem with camera hanging in post mode....

same problem with camera hanging in post mode....

We are having the same issue,

2 Cameras, MX sensors with latest build

I found that in our case the last clip had an R3D but no proxies made.
I'm guessing this is because the 1stAC wasn't able to wait any longer before shutting down the camera and rebooting.

The last clip was fully intact and rendered fine but there were no proxies.
The shot in question was only 1min27sec long.

Is there a min amount of time that one should wait before knowing that the camera is REALLY hung at that point and should power down?

oh...just got another one same problem and reported 11 drop frames.
Clip plays fine in RocketcineX, but again no QT proxies and this time camera was flashing as though it was still rolling and running timecode....before the 1stAC shut it down.

Any ideas?

We think it's the drive

We think it's the drive

The only thing that is consistent when this occurs is the Drive.
As we are rotating 4 red drives between 2 cameras the same drive had this problem. While none of the others have.

Taking it out of circulation.

Would still like to hear if anyone else has any idea what causes this?

Please contact RED tech support and also send them a LOG file from one of those cameras.

I suspect you may have a minor problem with that RED-DRIVE / RED RAM, and it would be best if they can inspect it for you.

It is not the Build. The OP said it happened on one drive and not the others

In any of these cases, contact RED tech support and send them a copy of the camera's LOG file.

I've had this happen several times, but always the R3D is intact and the Quicktime reference is missing. This takes just a quick in and out of RedAlert, to rebuild them. Are you sure you actually lost footage?

I have seen the 4K R3D file on drives before they were sent to Red to fix the SATA_TRANS_FAULT. Everyone should seriously send their drives to Red to have that problem fixed. Even if you haven't experienced it, send your drives to Red and have them checked out. I end up working with too many drives that don't have that problem and then they become a nightmare on set.

The problem with intact R3D but no proxies seemed to be a heat issue the few times I have seen it, but I have never been able to confirm and it is so easy to fix, I didn't look too hard.

i think we may have lost the last 10 sec on the B angle.
I don't think its a heat issue as we are in studio.
