  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

Mid-May is a rough guide. They never said 15 May, though that'd be great!

I thought Jim said 15th, but this is what he actually wrote:

Mid-May is just that. I called that date in the hopes I would have the info I needed to say something relevant. Let's hope...

Jim

So, I'm guessing no mid-May announcement. Could be wrong...

Today's news. From Cannes.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/16/movies/16hellman.html?ref=movies

«... the entire film was shot on what is essentially a still camera (the Canon 5D Mark II), while looking like a mega-million Hollywood production. (“Road” cost “under five million,” Mr. Gaydos said.)

“ He said another film at Cannes was shot with the same kind of camera, “but they started shooting in December, and we started in July, so I guess we’re the first.”
»

I actually shot the world's first feature on the 5DII.."The Louisiana Conversation" Wrapped in February 2009....but this guy's film is finished and made it to Cannes...while mine is probably still sitting on the Producers' editing bay :confused5: LOL

There's another interesting film at Cannes shot on the 5DII - Quentin Dupieux (aka Mr. Oizo)'s "Rubber" about a tire that comes to life and goes on a murderous rampage.

A camera is a camera - to an extent. I always advocate the best tools affordable and available for the job at hand. When I shot "TLC" I was asking myself constantly - whould I have done this with an EX1? Definitely couldn't do it with an HVX and have any level of freshness. In the end I'm glad we used the 5DII, because I got paid and rented the camera to the production... If I didn't need the money to LIVE I probably would have sacrificied my paltry rate and demanded that we shoot Red... Horses for Courses as they say. I've been springboarding all the money I've made in the last year to get better and better tools and I'm aiming to take that philosophy and approach all the way to a R1MX and eventually an Epic.

I've tapped everything an HDSLR can do at this stage in the game...so looking forard to going DSMC when I can!

Another concern with T2i that I read is you don't get true HD output in the HDMI while recording compared to 7D.

The problem with this is that since these cameras really suffer from moire and aliasing with fine detail, having an HD monitoring source with an HD rez monitor is essential if you want to catch this stuff before you offload it on to a computer. There is NO way in camera to see if you have problems since the video playback does not allow you to go 1:1 in camera.

The S35 can't get here fast enough! :) I am tired of losing footage because I don't have an external monitor yet (waiting on the smallHD one they just announced at NAB).

I think mid-May was a pretty general statement. It sounds like Jim didn't even know if he would have any information on an exact date:

Mid-May is just that. I called that date in the hopes I would have the info I needed to say something relevant. Let's hope...

Jim

Just to remind everyone that this is a forum about RED. General discussion is ok, but please don't let this thread go nasty or start comparisons between camera B (non-RED) and camera A (non-RED). There is http://dvxuser.com

Thanks and a happy weekend to all of you.

I'm here to support the Scarlet, Sorry my comment to go out and shoot with what you have got someone's panties in a bunch. Everyone here wants to take it up a notch in quality. I'm not working with fancy gear myself so I'm not gloating over those here who see the Scarlet as the ticket to the next level, I'm in the same boat. I was watching the footage we shot Thursday cut into the show 7 hours later. We shot SD DV. We practiced lighting, editing, ADR. We put it on YouTube for our friends to watch. We didn't do it for money. We did it for practice. One of our "free" actors got a gig on a NBC show using our Youtube videos to show off his skills. You can sit here and dream or you can go out and work on something even if its for free as networking with people can pay off later for you. Strangers rude comments here have no effect on my life at all. My thoughts are to Jim's health...that is more important than a camera update people.

There never was a 15th date set.. Just mid-may. We are still waiting on a few pieces of information to come forth before we can lay it all out for you.

Thanks for your patience :)

The announcement will come when they are ready, no need to get worked up over it. Waiting for scarlet to shoot that great short is no excuse for not writing and filming other projects in the meantime, we can all learn more and always have room to improve. the equipment you use shouldn't matter, it should be about your talent. that doesn't mean you don't need a scarlet but that certainly doesn't mean you can't go out there and shoot any project right now with very little limitations. I would love for scarlet to be out right now, but that's not going to hold me back from filming the projects I have on the go right now. Practice your craft and when you are ready so will scarlet, otherwise if you are that successful and established by a red one and get on the list for an epic.

edit: well I guess jarred covered the update

I second that David. And let's change any animosity against brands please? They are only and above all, tools. It is the man (or girl :-) behind who can do something with them (or not).

Thanks, Jarred!! :)
