The topic title really says it all.

Can we use the upgraded Red One MX and the Epic as left and right cameras for 3d?

If we get the Epic and upgrade our Red One to Mysterium X, they both use the same chip, right?

So the frame size should match, right?

So if we use an identical Red Prime on each camera, the frames should match?

I understand that the Red One MX is not the same as an Epic, but if we use the Epic at a lower resolution and Redcode version, can we match them?

Obviously, using a beamsplitter rig, there is always some difference in picture tone and color. This can be fixed in post.

But it's obviously vital that the framesize is the same.

Any thoughts or advice?

Hi Paul,

from the info I've gathered, that should not be a problem. I exchanged an e-mail with Element Technica, their 3D rig made to handle Red Ones should perfectly be capable of being equiped with one Red One and one Epic. Among the formats listed for the Epic are, if I'm not mistaken, all the formats the Red One is capable of (ie. 4.5K WS, 4K 16:9, 4K HD, 4K 2:1, 3K, etc.) plus the 5K options. So no problem. My only thought, is in a 3D rig, the cameras are a small factor in the cost, and the advantages of using a smaller rig are numerous, so I don't know how pratical it will be to do 3D with a Red One, when you could be doing it with a smaller rig equed with Scarlets or Epics.

Cheers,
Damien
