  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone got the cash for a 11-2000 lens?

It's not an 11-2000, it's a 2000mm f11. That's pretty much a telescope :-)

That thing is crazy!

What's the knob near the lens mount?

whats the purpose?

Taking pictures of stuff that's pretty far away or close-ups of objects at a moderate distance. From a cinema perspective it has little value other than maybe certain shots where you want atmospherical distortion or other anomalies that come with shooting extreme long focal lengths.

This lens will see more use in a scientific, documentary or ENG situation. The lens is a 2000mm and covers FF35. The NASA DOME systems are a 5600mm equivalent and are what is used to shoot footage of rocket launches etc.. Like the shots up-close to the rocket boosters firing a shuttle launch.

This lens would work well mounted on a boat or jeep for viewing wildlife. I bet it takes amazing pictures of the moon. If I could find one for ~$10K, I would definitely buy it. Although somewhat rare, I think the asking price in this ebay auction is a bit high. I know a camera shop that actually has one of these to rent. I have never rented or used one though...

Or ever see news photographers taking pictures when a city is getting bombed? they are usually a solid mile outside the city, with the longest lens on the planet taking pictures... this would qualify as one of them.

I bought a tamron 500mm mirror lense (fixed aperature at f8, prime) + tamron2->nikon adapter + a 2xextender for £160, to point at the moon mainly. That looks better, but pricey.. i'd want a 3x extender for it too..

Yummy... That is what I thought of. The ubiquitous desert shot. But best used in other, more original ways of course.

An other good use could be when you have someone looking through a scope and you want a POV. Depending on magnification plausibility of course. I suppose "Shooter" (2007) could have gotten great mileage out of a good ultra-telephoto lens. Can't seem to remember them using anything this long, but I could be very wrong because it has been a while since I watched it.

I would love to see what 2,000m looks like, as I am not familiar with it. But I can think of several other great uses for narrative, but always with a marked motivation.

We have a Meade ETX-LS 6 telescope that is an f/10 1524mm :) They have an 8 inch version too that is 2000mm, both of these are a LOT cheaper than that Nikon! :)

It takes great moon and galaxy pictures. Here are two that my girlfriend took with a Nikon D90 attached.

Google for Panavision 300x lens i.e. 7 - 2100mm

I'm thinking of "investing" in the opteka 650-1300mm (also called the 1300-2600mm when bought with the 2x extender!). f8-f16. They're supposed to be crap, but only cost about $240, so worth a laugh :)

I'd use my Opteka for software based super-resolution experiments to see if it can add anything in the creation of bigger moon luminance plates than my red 300 and tamron 1000 (500 with 2x), however flakey the glass. Combining multiple frames, and long exposure may yield something useful in terms of luminance, or not.. the lenses are routinely compared to the bottom of a coke bottles..

So the answer to the initial question posed by this thread is: "yes, or no.."

I heard that's the new favorite CU lens for Michael Bay.

:biggrin5:

Haha! We don't have any surface shots yet and our D90 is in the shop being repaired (hot pixels) but we'll have to shoot some and post here!
