  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can you simulate this effect digitally?

I am looking for a plug in or a technique that will make titles look as though they've been optically printed. It would be a program or plug in that would make an image (in the case, the still image of a credit) look as though it's been shot on film, ie the registration isn't perfect and stable like a digital image, so it would just be doing a very subtle stutter effect on both the horizontal and vertical axis of the image. Any ideas?

Put a wiggle expression in After Effects for the position parameter.
Alt + click on the stopwatch and write:

wiggle(10, 4)

10 is the frequency (per second)

4 is the amount (pixels)

10 and 4 is just an example - but a good start.
Tweak the amounts to taste.

Thanks! I do not have AE on this computer but I will experiment in the editing suite tonight and let you know how it comes out. Any idea of an effect or filter I can use and tailor in final cut?

there are a whole host of grain type plugins out there... reGrain from the foundry is a very good FCP one. Look also at Magic Bullet looks... loads of tools with in that plugin suite that will help your cause.

you should be able to keyframe what you want with in the Motion tab of your shot in FCP.

I have never used Motion - but I'm pretty sure you can create something similar with expressions/behaviours.

Graham Nattress - Silent Film plugin

Boris Continuum Complete - Film Damage plugin

Magic Bullet - Misfire plugin set includes - Gate Weave, Dust, Splotches, Basic Deep and Micro Scratches, Fading and so on.

Some of these I think you can buy individually.

Why can't film be stable? As long as when you're doing your camera tests you make sure the registration is stable than you should be fine. I've seen some rock solid reg tests.

A way to do it would be to shoot your titles on film and then optically print them.

I think he wants an effect of bad film reg, not good stuff.

Okay so I used wiggle but when i apply it, it doesn't work with a still image, even if i expand the length of the image runtime. So I export the image as a video, but then the credit (which was made in pshop with a transparent backdrop so I can overlay it in final cut) loses it's transparency. This would be fine if the credits were over black, but they are over film. What can I do now?

You need to export the still as a video with ALPHA - in Final Cut that is most readily supported by Prores4444 Or Animation codec's.

Sorry for my ignorance; what is alpha? I am already working in Prores 422 if this helps; I am editing s16mm source material in HD. I want to overlay the title onto that.
