Now we just need drives and other recording media to match that speed and we'll be set. I really hope everyone transitions to this fast, USB 2 is balls and 90% of the products out there use it.

snip... USB 2 is balls and 90% of the products out there use it.

And we'd still be using 9pin RS-232 if Jobs hadn't forced the industry's hand by including only USB on the Imac and instantly creating a market for it.

Yeah, but you'll still want a few USB ports for backwards compatibility. So why not make those USB ports USB3?

Also, Light Peak can't power anything. So the future is: both.

"Waiting for Light Peak" is no excuse not to put USB3 on laptops now.

I hear ya, and I think lightpeak might get incorporated quicker even if Jobs doesn't drag the PCites kicking and screaming simply because it will give a commodity product something to differentiate for a little while.

A computer with a single unified cabling system connected to my: camera, hard drives, mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer etc... minimalists dream...

Hopefully the Macbooks pick these up next update (October?) so we'll finally be able to use the 15 inch with fast storage.

I'm really excited about Light peak - I think that soon after it starts appearing on computers, the only thing USB will be useful for anymore will be keyboards, mice and old flash drives.

USB 3.0 seems to have gained a ton of traction lately.. if Apple supported it ( which it doesn't look like will happen any time soon ) it would be adequate for most everyones current needs. All I know as has already been mentioned.. USB 2.0 has been outdated for some time, and as great as firewire 800 is, is quickly becoming a bottleneck as drive / ssd / flash memory keeps developing.

Whatever the new standard becomes.. we will support it. I just wish everyone would get off the pot and make up their minds so we could get on with it :)

For some reason i think you are right Tom...

Building a new editing PC right now; it'll have USB 3.0 just because it is available. I hope that they will have more devices using it soon!

USB theoretical limits have always been far far ahead of their actual limits. Personally I am looking forward to light peak and think it has taken WAY to long for fiber optics to make it into the average home. eSata is alright for speed... but has such sloppy connections. FireWire 800 is great, but is last generation tech... Light peak will be my winter investment.

This is what light peak truly is. What I think is most interesting and hasn't been mentioned is that lightpeak is _not_ a data protocol. It does hold the possibility of for example hooking up say 4 esata drives to a breakout box over one port on the laptop. That would be killer on set!

*cough*Red station?*cough*

USB (including 3) taxes the system with unnecessary overhead, unlike firewire. It will be interesting to see what kind of system overhead LightPeak uses...

I think Lightpeak will become the defacto standard because of the fact that monitors and high bandwidth devices can use the addition speed. USB 3 will have its place for legacy products.

Can you see USB3 or Lightpeak Red Rocket Cards for MBPs?

Well, it's my understanding that lightpeak can be added to any computer with a simple PCI card, right? That would mean, whenever it comes out, just add the PCI card and you're off to the races.

Considering that I just built a new PC that I don't think has USB 3, would it be possible to add USB 3.0 also with a PCI card? Right now I have eSATA running from PCI.

USB 3 for sure can be added with an extra card.

Lightpeak, maybe?

Yes intel has shown lightpeak using a simple PCIexpress card multiple times...they have also shown strange little dongle things to connect current devices, such as monitors
