I am looking for a solution to add grain and super8 or super16 film artefacts to the clean sdi signal so client and director have a better Preview of the final image. What are the options on a small(ish) commercial budget? A sdi mixer and different stock clips?

Grain has not been easy to integrate into a live signal. Live Grain is extremely expensive to integrate.

Other solutions may have popped up but to fit your budget I wonder if just showing them after might be the most realistic.

Tell the client when you shoot on film on set, you also don't get to see the grain there -- you have to wait for the film to be processed.

My advice is to just do some tests and give them a "before and after" so they understand the possibilities and the limitations.

Note that "Live Grain" does not work with live video as far as I know -- it's an OFX process that requires render time.
