Default FLUT Science...

You really are going to love this. It includes...

1. New Color Space.
More accurate color science and a new color space called REDcolor. Remember that Color Space is not baked in to RAW. This will be the option to CameraRGB or REC 709. I pick REDcolor every time now. But all are more accurate.

2. New Gamma.
REDgamma. It is a gamma that uses more information from RAW than REC 709 or REDspace. It matches your meter. It looks fantastic. The standard REDgamma is fairly flat and ready to grade. REDfilm is a gamma that emulates scanned film... for those traditionalists.

3. Old Legacy.
REDspace, as a color space or as a gamma, plus all the old "other gammas" will be included in REDCINE-X for legacy use. But you can grade your old footage with REDcolor and REDgamma... that is the power of RAW.

4. FLUT.
Graeme's baby. This one will be shown and explained at RED Day. You are going to love this. Money back guarantee... oh, forgot. It's free.

In REDCINE-X, you set Color Space (REDcolor). Set Gamma (REDgamma). Set or check your White Balance. Adjust the FLUT Control. Grade. Easy.

REDCINE-X has several new features that you will appreciate... like Shadow Control. Plus... a few new big surprises.

I hope to see many of you at RED Day in February.

Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the Christmas gift.

Will this go into existing RED ONE's on a future build?

Merry CHristmas.

Some of this new science will go into a firmware build for the RED ONE. But a lot of this is "post science"... meaning it is just better with whatever you have shot or will shoot. EPIC and Scarlet have a bit more of the capability built in (FLUT Control)... but the RED ONE definitely improves with much of this.

This is great. That means the old stuff or stuff we shoot now improves again (gotta love RAW). Can you give a hint as to what FLUT stands for or where the name comes from?

My guess is:

F lexible L ook U p T able

Thanks for the quick honest reply.

Let me think... H.264 or RAW.

Red film is a clever idea you know.
It'll be fun to shoot stuff in camera and then have the non-techies say "holy hot damn, red really is like film!"
Plus it will be nice as a kind of 'mood setter'...
Intrigued for FLUT...
Merry Christmas to you and all at Red, amazing you guys are still at it today. ;)

There's obviously no comparison between the two and the technological superiority is clear... but there's no discounting how powerful and cool the Canons have been to play with this year. I can't wait to see what you guys have in store, but I still have a 7D sitting next to me on the couch as I type this. :)

Will we hear/see anything regarding FLUT and other details at the earlier [CML] event[s] or will all be unveiled at RED[user] Day?
