Yes, Epic S35 has a cropped sensor (approx 1.25x or APS-H in 35mm still terms, Super 35 in cinema film terms), but lens choice still needs to be carefully considered (from the DSLR world for example, Canon EF rather than EF-S and Nikon FX rather than DX, and their Zeiss or Leica equivalents) to ensure adequate coverage with minimum vignetting.
Is this correct - I didn't think it was anywhere close to aps-h? Does the 30x15 include lookaround? What is the size of the actual recorded portion?

Well I'm not a sensor or camera designer but this information is gleaned from published specifications. 30x15 is the physical sensor size, see these tables for different (reduced area) recording options and lens image circles. Anything 5k will have a 30mm (just under) diagonal or greater.

http://web.me.com/ducloslenses/DataRef/ImgCir.html

http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.ph...9&postcount=48

Notice in the Duclos table that, apart from some of the zooms at the wider end, nearly all of the cinema lenses listed have image circle diameters in excess of 32mm, including all the RPP's.

For comparison:

APS-H sensor is 27.9x18.6mm (3:2 aspect ratio, 33.5mm diagonal) (Canon 1D Mk IV).
APS-C (Canon) is 22.3x14.9mm (3:2 aspect ratio, 26.8mm diagonal) (Canon 7D).
APS-C (Nikon) is 23.6x15.8mm (3:2 aspect ratio, 28.4 diagonal (Nikon D300s).

So the closest match to Cinema S35 from the DSLR world is APS-H. As for different recording formats however, lens image circle v sensor diagonal is the comparison that needs to be checked. Interestingly Canon recommend full-frame EF lenses for the 1D Mk IV, rather than EF-S lenses (short back focus design notwithstanding) which were designed for APS-C.

Thanks for the info. I just don't have as much time anymore to keep up with the forum.
Trying to separate hype-fact from hype-fiction.

The MX sensor is 30x15 and there is a look around area that is larger than the largest recordable area, I can't recall the exact numbers at this moment. The largest recordable area is 5120x2700.

5120 pixels at 5.4 microns = 27.65mm wide.

So in other words, if you're recording the full 5K width, you are recording the same width as an APS-H DSLR sensor.

You don't necessarily need APS-H or FF35 lenses because the aspect ratio is rather narrow. Essentially 1.9:1 at 5K full. Many S35, if not most at medium and longer focal lengths, will cover just fine. Same with lenses made for APS-C sized sensors. But it's best to test each lens to know for sure.
