Getting older may mean that you can't hear high frequencies... but they're not going away.

We get the squeal too.
But what I read into Jim's post is that to most accurately match the monitor to actual Rec709 recorded image characteristics you want to drop the brightness down by four clicks. Since I am not too concerned with matching the monitor exactly (we're shooting RAW so it's the false colour display and myriad of exposure meters that I'm basing my exposure on) I will continue to run the LCD at full brightness to avoid the squeal. So if you want everything to match perfectly to your on set calibrated monitors, adjust brightness. If not, you don't need to. Cheers, Paul

Not only does ours squeal, but the quality of our lcd is quite inferior to all the other Red 5.6" lcds that I've seen. We took delivery of ours in early 2008 and it's an older plastic one. It squealed from the beginning, but others had reported the same, so I figured this was the norm. However that summer, we rented another package for a two camera shoot that we were doing and to my surprise, not only did the lcd in that package not squeal, but the quality of the lcd was far superior to ours. The blacks were much blacker, even with the brightness turned up all the way and the colors actually matched fairly close to those in the evf. The color of our lcd has never even come close to matching that of our evf, and the blacks are horrible. It has a very blue cast and the squeal is so bad that we never use it in anything other then full brightness. After seeing how poorly our lcd performed up against another, I contacted support and was told to send it in. I did that in the summer of 2008 and was simply told that for that version of the lcd, everything performed as it should and it passed all of the quality control tests. So the same one was sent back to us. Was I happy? No, but what else could I do, I'd already sent it in and was told there was nothing wrong with it. I have to say, support on our two cameras and two RedRockets has been great, but this was one issue that never sat quite well with me.

I know I have seen a thread about assignable monitor outputs, but I thought I would put that out there again to see if we may see it in build 30ish. I would luv to look at False color I mean "video" not sure why that name was chosen but anyway I would luv to have it not go out to client monitor if not desired or not go in the operator VF or if I could just send timecode out to client monitor. Just little things I love this new build guys!!! It's fantastic!!!
