I think I wasn't alone when, about ten years ago, I suspected Apple was working on a high-end image manipulation application along the lines of Photoshop. Just in case Adobe pulled the plug on the Mac version. My wild guess: Apple never needed to pull the trigger, so it kept improving it in secret. Apple still doesn't need to release it, but there's no reason not to either. Personally I don't use that kind of software but that won't stop me enjoying the sideshow.

I can't blame them. BUT I wish it were not so. They haven't lost money on their pro stuff (apart from maybe the XServe) so what is the harm of keeping it? From Apple's perspective, it's at worst - at worst - philanthropy which makes a profit.

EDIT: Apple will update the Mac Pro but later than customers would like.
Good production values may not be noticed. Bad production values will be.

Even if it wasnt for Professionals, any updates to any Apple computer user is a good thing.
We cant be the only ones that can have all this fun right?

I love the declarations that purport to know what Apple's executives are thinking and planning. Come on Jay, leave it alone. :-(

Have to say that, after Recent issues with other editing software, coming from the old "industry standard" final cut pro and having despised final cut X when it was introduced, I took a second look to It. 10.05 is much, much better than the initial 10.0 and 10.1. I'm seriously considering editing a 4K Prores HQ project on it. It's certainly doable. Don't know how it will "talk" with resolve and how Resolve will perform with the Retina MacBook pro. But am getting real time performance with minor frame skipping with basic Apple effects. Very impressive. Most impressive is that when I export a 4K qt Prores 4:2:2 HQ, it plays out smoothly with the laptop. 4K is truly here...

It looks like an application which could combine the functionality of illustrator and photoshop. I'm not a huge photoshop fan (I actually find editing images in AE more intuitive lol) so seeing something that integrates the two from a graphic design POV could be very interesting. Vectors and bitmaps in one happy family. XD

Lets not let this dissolve* into an FCPX conversation too much though. :)

As far as Apple abandoning the pro users is concerned... you guys have used a Macbook Pro Retina right? There IS still a place for towers, absolutely, but that place is shrinking and the Retina is a stunning piece of PRO hardware.

    *Cut to? Sorry, puntastic...

I was always stunned how 99% of all graphist use only one tool to work their art.

Imagine cinematography using only on camera...

Perhaps when the price of professional tools are sold for not much more than consumer/prosumer prices, the revenue is much bigger serving the consumer/prosumer due to sheer numbers of the masses. I have always felt that once Apple got into distribution, the focus on professional tools started diminishing. Which I can understand; getting 30 cents of every dollar on songs, television, movies, magazines, etc. is a far better business than the tool that made them. Content is King.
