I have found the reason these cameras have the LCD and more people are using them is because the company making the camera cheap out on the EVF and the LCD actually becomes the better option to use. It's not really old thinking its just many new shooters have not had the chance to see through a good EVF. Once a person has seen through a really good EVF you will not want to go back to the LCD. I know a few who had early EVF's and though they had a bit of a color problem the verdict was that it is one of the best if not the best EVF you can buy.
hmmm....just my 2 cents, but...
gorgeous 7 inch screen that two or three people can check out and use for overheads, underhand, or (on a tripod) at arms length
or
EVF, where one person has to lean in or completely block their own face. Try walking along with a documentary subject with your eye pressed to the viewfinder. Possible? Yes. Convenient? Not so much.
Honestly, I see no reason at all for an EVF. And, yes, I consider myself a pro.
Arte you talking about the RED LCD because if you are then I have to assume you haven't seen it. Try it out first. Its not 7 inch it's 5.6 inch and it has about 1 degree angle of view, there is no way that three people can check it out at the same time because it has a very limited angle of view and you really have to be looking at it dead on in order fo rit to look good.
I agree with you in principle that a good high-rez wide angle of view LCD is a very useful thing to have on the set. But for a Red One if I could only have the choice of the Red LCD or the EVF there's not a doubt in my mind that the EVF is way preferable. If you need a separate LCD get an HDMI cable and run it to a computer monitor for people on set to use.
