  1. #1 Recording directly to a computer?
I've been tasked with the duty of figuring out a way to record a video source, either a camcorder or CCTV like system, directly to a computer/editing system. The purpose being to record how parents interact with their children from behind two-way glass. The clients want the ability to record video and audio, at a fairly high quality, to be able to instantly show the parents their interactions and make comments while doing so. My budget is $7,000.

I'm wondering if Premiere Pro has the capability to do such a process. Essentially, record video/audio directly. I typically use Final Cut, but the clients do not use Mac computers. If not, does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thank you.

PP does have direct capture. You'll need a capture card on the machine.

If you have a Blackmagic card they have an app called BlackMagic Media Express that does a fine job. Easiest would be to run audio into whichever camera you're using then capture the HDSDI stream (just to make sure audio/video/timecode are all in sync.)

Blackmagic Design UltraStudio express or 3D thunderbolt are working great with Epic and Scarlet. With the look around feature it's really nice to get the extra FOV on Scarlet.

You should try using Edius Pro with a capture card. This is what some tv studios use. I have seen it used to do sporting events, live performances and etc. The only thing is that it doesnt support r3d files or raw files so you would have to convert them first. Also its expensive so if you need a studio grade solution you should check out there site and ask them what they can do for you but if you are on a much smaller budget you should just stick with the Blackmagic Design UltraStudio express

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll put in some research to all those recommended and decide on one.

I'm going to second Cornell Williams' suggestion of Edius Pro. v6.5 was just released and there is a cross grade price available now for $395 I think. You can also download the trial version if I'm not mistaken. It's built for speedy turn-round and is great for broadcast workflows. They have announced native R3D support and it was supposed to be in there for this release, but I'm not sure if it made it. Haven't had time to dig in myself. But for directly recorded solutions and live capture, you won't be working with R3D.

Sony Vegas Pro and Premiere can also record direct from a camera as well via their capture interfaces. I don't know if software is really the big concern here. What you really need to iron out first is which camera, which capture card or other hardware, that sort of thing. Do you need to supply a complete system for this or are you adapting this to fit other computers the client already has? If it has to fit existing hardware, do you know specs?
