Unless you use a Mattebox and normal filters in front of you lens, and as Jeff recommends, I strongly suggest you don't go the front screw in filter route, waste of time and money!

Here's what I bought from B&H, and they work awesome in the drop in filter tray:

    BW103C43 43mm #103 Solid Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Filter
    BW10643 43mm #106 Neutral Density (ND) 1.8 Filter
    BW10243 43mm #102 Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Glass Filter
    BW10143 43mm #101 Neutral Density (ND) 0.3 Glass Filter

    137$ for all 4...

    B+W 43mm (COATED) #103 (ND 0.9) FILTER
    B&H# BW103C43 : Mfr# 65073024
    price:$42,00

    B+W 43mm #106 (ND 1.8) FILTER
    B&H# BW10643 : Mfr# 65066484Q
    price:$45,95

    B+W 43mm NEUTRAL DENSITY #102 ND0.6 FILTER
    B&H# BW10243 : Mfr# 65072832
    price:$24,50

    B+W 43mm NEUTRAL DENSITY #101 ND0.3 FILTER
    B&H# BW10143 : Mfr# 65072640
    price:$24,50

I think you got all the infos you need now!

    Thanks Guys!

Especially you Lewis with order info and all!

Having a .3, .6 .9 and 1.8 in 43mm at that price point sounds great. One of the benefits of small diameter filters!

Sorry to hear about Bob. Met him at NAB and found him to be wonderfully informative, helpful and a gentleman to boot.

OK, so just realized you are listing 43mm filters, which are actually quite easy to find. A series 5.5 filter is 40.5mm.

I can find 40.5mm filters on eBay, but I think those are screw in and probably too thick to use as a drop in. Does anyone know about this?

When you search for 40.5 drop ins, only 2 filters come up (the wrong ones).

    Hi Mark,

the drop in tray of the 300mm lens is threaded, thus the use of regular 43mm screw in filters. You screw the filter to the tray and then insert the tray. It's not a "loose" filter system... ;)

    I have a Leica R 280mm lens, not a Red 300. The filter size. Is 40.5mm not 43mm.

Thanks. I was actually just thinking in terms of a clear flat to protect the front element, but I'm finding that the hood does a pretty good job of keeping it safe. I'm planning to pick up a few 43mm NDs. Love the price for filters at that size, especially after buying 4x5.65 Panavision filters!

43mm is the size as Lewis points out, they do need to be low-profile filters as the clearance is rather tight. My set of ND's for the RED Pro 300 are Hoya and work well.
