I think many people won't experience this black screen. It's very configuration dependent, I'm free of it just by juggling a few things around. On my rMBP I can make it happen whenever I want, and it seems that many of the others on the developer forums who are following the issue can as well. Still waiting for Apple to acknowledge it, which they often don't do publicly.

I had used a friend's mid-2008 (I believe) MBP unibody with ML on it, decided to upgrade my mid-2010 MBP from 10.6.8 to 10.8 (my first app store purchased OS). Holy shitstorm...

I'd upgraded my MBP with an OWC SSD using the OWC data doubler (replacing my superdrive), then used CCC to copy my system drive from the internal spinning HD to the SSD...all was great for a solid 4 months and plenty of intensive use. The installation seemed to go fine, but upon boot up, I got the grey apple screen, but with a bunch of black text on the upper left hand side (see attached picture). Safe mode works (albeit slow and clunky as expected), tried some other solutions that people offered on various forums (lots of issues with SSD drives, also HD drives), but nothing that seems to work for sure, and I'm not technically proficient enough to dig deeper on this one for fear of blowing up my otherwise lovely computer. Spent a few hours on the phone with apple support, tried reinstalling, zapping pram, etc. Tried booting in Verbose and Single User mode (these sometimes got me an all black screen with two pages of similar jibberish), all to no avail. Then the support guy suggested I try to upgrade the old HD (which still had SL on it), which I tried. Well, I get the same result from the OEM HD. Tried recovery mode on that one too, a reinstall, still no luck. Taking it into an apple store tomorrow to see what these geniuses can do...also considering that I'll have to do a clean install and possibly lose some info that hasn't been completely backed up...yeah, bad on me for not doing a proper clone and testing...I guess I just saw other people with older computers doing just fine, and figured why the hell not? Never again... My only consolation is that I'm in the middle of some relative downtime, so this screw-up hasn't affected my ability to work, but man am I hoping they can work some magic.

My advice would be to do it the right way (backups, cloning, testing, or just plain waiting).

    My '09 17"MBP?... Brickedlast night.

I had recently checked the HD using utilities... But ML doesn't like my HD and now it is bricked. Only had a little time to look but apparently not unusual....

We've been testing with REDCINE-X PRO on Mountain Lion for a while now and things seem fine. We've not seen the Mountain Lion black startup issue yet internally. For people who've missed it, the latest RCX PRO beta also supports the new retine macbook.

Another big cheer for Retina support on the Beta. Showed redcine X On the Retina in a big post house in Hong Kong yesterday. I think I just boosted Apple's sales to the staff there. And the "wow" people got from Red footage on it is priceless- who says 4k doesn't matter in a "small" screen?
