I'm trying towork out a solution for fast media transfer on set.

Using my asus ux21 (http://myultrabook.info/?p=1382) I only get about 55 MB/s when redmag is connected directly to the asus' usb3 connection.
According to the linked article the internal SSD averages about 250 MB/s, so does anyone know why I'm getting this slow speed?

The plan is of course not to use the internal SSD for this task as it is only 128GB. So the next steps is testing my usb3 hub, and finding a good HDD.

I've done some tests with a seagate barracude green 1TB disk through usb3 external casing. That performed at 35 MB/s. (I know the disk sucks but it was the only option in-store atm).

Looks like one of the USB ports on there is USB 2.0. Which one were you using?

One port is usb2, but I'm using the 3.0 port for this.

How fast does data copy from the computer back to the REDMAG?

Sad truth is the internal SSD on that ultrabook is probably not that fast, particularly when it comes to write times. Not unusual. :(

could be a early gen usb 3.0 port as well, i've noticed that when they first came out usb 3 just wasn't anywhere close to being up to spec. lately in all the new systems they've been pretty good. but u should really try a drive to drive transfer externally if you can where u know the external hard drive can go a 100 mb/sec or more and see if u see a difference.

Quite possible there too. I don't know which USB3 host that system uses, nor did I bother to look. Many earlier model USB3 hosts, even from the middle of last year, often have compatibility and speed issues when trying to negotiate a full 4.8Gbps "super speed" link.

one of the pitfalls of a stock pc system. you never know where they are skimping on with money. cheap ethernet card in there, usb ports, could be anything.

The speed on transfering from internal SSD to redmag using usb3 is just about exactly 80MB/s. Tested today.

It's safe to say you're operating in USB3.0 mode, then. I'm going to make the assumption that your internal SSD is not up to the specs claimed -- pretty much normal. The advertised 250MB/s rate is probably determined under optimal lab conditions and was only a burst measured here and there.

Try running a BlackMagic or AJA disk speed test on the internal SSD and see what numbers you get. I'm betting they won't differ a whole lot from the USB3.0 speed you're seeing on transfers. If they do, then I would look back at the USB3 port and/or cabling.

also try to clear off some hard drive space. a lot of ssds slow down to a crawl as it gets full. if your boot disk is near max capacity, that could account for the drop in the performance.
