  1. #1 Exporting DPX with no color baked in
    Hello Everybody,

I'm a feature film editor who's doing my first Redcine X job. I've managed to export and EDL from Avid and get it to import properly to Redcine X and relink. Everything looks like a million bucks. Now I want to export my shots as DPX files (these are VFX pulls, btw) and I'd like them to be flat without any looks applied. What's the quickest way to achieve that?

Also, on an unrelated note, is it possible to have Redcine X export my shots in timeline order, not in clip name order? I've selected to output my timeline as separate clips, but I'd like them to all be sequentially created.

Thanks a million for your guidance here.

What does "flat" mean to you?
Color space: Redcolor2, redcolor3, redcolor, redspace, 709, etc.
    Gamma space: Redgamma3, redgamma2, 709, redlogfilm, etc.

Here are several options to get what you want:

Under the Look Manager, click "M" or "D", which I believe are "as shot" and "default".

It should come in as shot, but this doesn't mean it is correct. You may also have already customized the color of some clips and saved the RMDs (the look). You'll need to reset the RMDs to the as shot values, or something that is correct. You can create a custom template in the looks panel, and click on all the 'D's for each section, if the M/D for the whole looks manager doesn't work for you. I have a bunch of clips on a feature; half were shot outside, half were shot inside. Most are whitebalanced, but not all. For the purposes of editing (proxy creation), I created two templates - default 5600k and default 3200k. Then I applied both to all of the appropriate clips in bulk. After the edit, when I go back to swap out the proxies for a vfx or grading pass, I will white balance correctly for each individual clip.

In the browser you can also copy a look and paste it to all the other clips.

You could also try searching for all RMDs and deleting them, though test this first.

I believe the current RED recommendation for a plain default look for most people is:
Set to Redcolor3/redgamma3, white balance, adjust ISO and if needed, FLUT to get exposure correct.
Or if you want a linear curve, use redlogfilm instead of redgamma3.

You want REDcolor3 and REDlogFilm. And check the white balance of the scenes. Those choices will give you a log file that can preserve all of the available information. You should, of course, check to be sure the rest of the metadata is giving you good exposure. (i.e. not clipping and not buried in the noise floor.)

This is something I never do, but i'm pretty sure that if you choose "Timeline (all clips)" from the export menu you'll get shat you're looking for.

I would leave the WHite Balance and tint settings as they come in from camera metadata. You can reset the rest- saturation, shadows, curves, etc etc to default. this will give you the most unaffected dpx to work with. Redcolor3 and redlogfilm are good choices. Oh, and leave the ISO and FLUT as shot- it will most likely be right.
