There is the "lens front" indication on the Quick Release but I actually prefer the opposite configuration so I reversed it, it seems that there is not difference.

Is there an important reason to put the Quick release in the indicated position or can I keep it my way?

Yep. I have mine reversed for focus pullers used to Arri. Only problem is the quick release is difficult to operate with the side handle attached.

Seems dangerous to me, like there could be the risk of someone grabbing what they thought was the dovetail slide lever and accidentally grabbing the quick release lever. I know the release lever has a double lock on it, but it is possible to grab it and hit the red release button and release it all the way in one movement. That could lead to a scary situation.

I don't think it should be a problem Tom, on a set no so many people are "allowed" to manipulate your cam, if those people know about the configuration from the beginning it shouldn't be a problem. Also, in Any case if you open the quick release or the dovetail slide, you are suppose to support /grab your camera so it should be safe.
