Oh no! What is the Red port doing on the top?
It has always been there in the photos I've seen. I got mine Friday and I have to say that I really like the port on top. Its actually quite easy to make a top plate with a cutout (I threw one of my old VF Epic-M top plates on as a lark and cutout is a match fit). The port lemo orientation sends a right angle EVF/LCD cable straight back and it does take up a fair bit of room. This wont be ideal for some. But a straight EVF/LCD cable is sweet. I find this is the most useful and allows the easiest cabling to where I am putting my touch screen and EVF. IMO a side mount port would have caused a straight EVF cable to stick out way too far. A right angle cable would take up a lot of room along the side and potentially interfere with all the other inputs. The top position gives it a lot of flexibility. I like it.

That would likely be a $1000 accessory. Let me see some hands.
Hand right here! (the other one is still up for the Redmote Pro)

I don't mind the LCD/EVF port being on top, it think that's where it should be. I just wished the right angle cables weren't directed toward the rear of the camera, going forward or even to one side or the other would work better for me.

Is it possible to change the angle of the extra evf viewfinder cable? I am concerned about using larger batteries.

Whew! It was a squeaker but the connector just fits under the 19mm top rods and the Anton/Bauer mount. To remove it you need to take the battery mount off but it does fit.

Still think it is a terrible location for that port though.

For Prores I was hoping for an inboard RGB record mode... Look Ma'... No module required.

I know RED is all about RAW files but the door's beeing open already with external recording mode in recent firmware. Might be possible on Epic maybe to get RAW + prores hopefully instead of an HDR record mode. Maybe I'm just dreaming here...

There's a difference between having the camera set to output a clean feed and send out the trigger flags over SDI and actually having the appropriate hardware on board for efficient ProRes or DNxHD compression. I'm not saying it's impossible, but the hardware may not be there inside. The innards of the camera have been optimized for Redcode compression in a very, very, very specialized. way.

Now given the size of some external recorders (cough HyperDeck Shuttle 2) maybe we could see not just a rear module proxy solution, but a replacement for the side SSD that would incorporate those functions with a slightly larger side bump?

    Just a thought
