Here, problem solved - Buy a multimeter, buy a soldering station, fix your own cable. I value my time at about $100 an hour, so It's pretty clearly cheaper to buy a new one. If I was in the jungles of Uzbeki-beki-stan-stan, I would fix my own.

But it's a cable man! In the best case scenario you have a broken connection at a soldered joint, but in that case there is a high likelihood of cable damage as well, so it is ill advised not to replace the cable too. When you are done you have manufactured a new cable, so they cut out the middle step and just sell you a new cable. That's it.

They are expensive. There is no way around it but to handle them with proper care and plan for some replacements. Use good AC's. It's a PITA. Oh well whaduyagonnado?

The real complaint should be to Lemo, the company who designs, makes, and defines how the connectors should be assembled. Red just assembles them to suit their needs. But having a lot of first hand experience assembling and designing applications with Lemo connectors, it is my opinion that the price for their connectors is a fair one, even compared to some Lemo "knock-offs" and Lemo compatible connectors from china.

Ben, I don't know if it will give you any peace of mind to have someone from RED chime in, but...the answers to your questions were presented by others in this thread. If the repair cost exceeds the cost of a new item, we suggest a replacement. Sending your old cable back to us for a "credit" puts us in the same spot as a repair, having to invest cost to do something with it. Sometimes, building something new is cheaper than taking something, tearing it apart, fixing it, and putting it back together.

I accidentally squished my cable and am trying to find just the outer sleeve part. The pins inside are okay and I currently can use the cable in a 'lab' setting. If anyone is tossing a cable could they send me their sleeve first? Please? I'll pay shipping!

I think it becomes an unfortunate effect of 'comparison' HDMI cables are very cheap... Red cables are very high by comparison. I think sometimes there's a psychological thing in us that says if something looks the same as something else, it should have a perceived similar cost of production.
I think this is true of a lot of Red products (SSDs for example). But it would be helpful if Red were to license out the tech for other (reputable) companies to produce cables.. perhaps the higher volume of production will bring the price down, without ruining the high quality.

Until that time, the price is fair as only Red produce this cable, and they get to set their margins for it.

Ive purchased more LEMO cables than Id like to remember.

Ive opened these up and leaned what goes into them and ITS unbelievable the amount of cables inside these. They really are pretty amazing.
The information they carry along with power and capabilities is what makes it all possible to not need multiple cables.
Unfortunately they seem nearly impossible to repair or atleast not worth it due to how many strands of cables are inside them.

So instead what several of us have done is put clear shrink tubing at the ends to help strengthen them and make them tougher at the ends that bend.
    Its totally worth it.

Does it suck to have to buy new ones... ya however give the shrink tubing a try and hopefully you get more mileage out of them.

Youve got to admit the upside of these EPICS with todays firmwares and the modules that are starting to drop FAR outweighs a $220 cable.
Small price to pay for such a FUCKING crazy bad ass camera.

    Best of luck to ya.

Big Lu, you must be putting the shrink tubing on your custom cables, right? Or, how do you add the shrink wrapping to RED's cables?

The LEMO connectors used on the EVF/LCD cable are about $60 each, even when bought in bulk quantities like 1000 pieces. They pretty much have to be hand-assembled and tested. $220 isn't too bad for these cables and if one does need to be repaired where a connector has to be replaced, it's going to be cheaper to just replace the cable. Compared to any other similar double-ended LEMO cables on the market, the RED cables are pretty much a bargain. You want them "cheaper", make them yourself... You'll pay more than RED does for the connectors unless you buy a truckload of the kind you need and the only money you'll actually save will be a portion of the labor cost. But then you will have to do it yourself... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I've got much better things to do than monkey around with trying to fix or make my own LEMO cables.

Contact any of the pro cable shops / suppliers who assemble cables and get a quote for equivalent cables with proper LEMO connectors. You'll find that ordering from RED is the best deal going. Painful for the wallet, but true.
