I am doing some on site color as we speak and trying to apply a bit of alchemy to the image, but it is not affecting the image on the grading monitor, is this normal?

if you are talking about out of a RR, alchemy and any of those effects settings don't apply over red rocket hd sdi. it's technically a post effect, and has nothing to do with the manipulating the curves in a traditional way for raw footage. the rocket wasn't built to handle "effects" it's there for decompression and interpretation of r3d. there probably won't be any alchemy, grain, or any of those other effects out of this generation of rocket card ever.
