I emailed Jarred already about this, but thought I'd see what other fellow REDUsers thought of the idea:

Have the normal menu mode that the Epic / Scarlet have now become the "Advanced Menus" mode, and have another mode to easily toggle to called "Basic Menus" which hides many of the more complicated advanced features throughout the Camera. All of the features would still work when toggled to and stay active, but the user would be able to hide the more complex menus that sometimes get in the way of ACs / Operators who don't use the camera all the time.

The way its set up currently, isn't it sort of like this? You have the things that you access the most on the first "page"; Kelvin, Shutter Speed, Compression ratio, etc. Then on the second "page" you've got your deeper settings; formatting media, accessing your camera settings, display setup, etc.

    Hi Nick,

While you are correct, that is not exactly what I am referring to.

Quick access to certain menu items such as shutter, , framerate, white balance, etc, already exists, but I'm talking about simplifying what appears in all of the sub-menus.

For instance, if you want to access / program the user keys, the basic menu version would only allow access to the more common options, such as exposure check, magnify, raw check... all of the other complex options, such as "increment left channel audio +1", "zoom in speed 1", or "set focus mode for still"... there are many options within these menus, that, while extremely useful, are rarely used. Too have the ability to keep them hidden when not needed will reduce clutter of the UI and make the Camera much more friendly to operators and ACs that don't own them.

The interface really wouldn't change at all, the only thing different would be an option on the first menu to toggle back and forth from basic to advanced menu mode. All of the features still work if previously enabled, they just are hidden in the menus until the user want to get to them.

    That's the idea anyways... :-)

That's what I use the RedMote for. There are 4 pages of options I can setup for various levels of importance. Also in the new firmware build, I am using the softkeys for all the quickly needed functions. Also then the buttons on the side handle. Now the problem is how to recall what all the sidehandle buttons are programmed for!

I understand what you are asking for, its a bit like Apple's DVD Studio Pro, where when you first open the program, its asks you if you want Basic, Normal or Advanced layout. But, it seems that if I don't pick advanced, the one thing i'm looking for is hidden:)

My advice would be to create a PDF with menu paths for the most needed functions that aren't programmed to shortcut keys/softkeys on the camera/sidehandle. Then laminate it and keep it in the camera case, and make sure the AC knows about it. The UI I find is quick to navigate if you know where things are. If you don't, its a quagmire of confusing headings.

I'm designing a quickkey shortcut card for our EPIC right now, I'll try to remember to post it when I'm done.

The difference here is that you would always have quick access to toggle between Basic and Advanced from the main menu screen, so all features could be instantly accessible or hidden at a moment's notice.

I've spoken to many ACs in the field (who use, but don't own REDs) and have received very positive feedback regarding this idea.
