We have the extreme pleasure of testing the near-final model of Element Technica's EVF mounts which were provided to us for upcoming RED tests on a feature film. We'll have a more detailed report in the next couple of weeks but the bottom line is that Stephen and Hector and the rest of ET have created an essential accessory. We are beyond grateful for their help in getting the REDs as 'set friendly' as possible for our upcoming tests and wanted to share a bit of the love here.

With the mount on, the EVF is rock solid in place. Just imagine the placement and feel of an ARRI 435 viewfinder and you'll get the idea.

The ability to position the viewfinder far forward on the mount is key to getting the proper balance for hand-held shooting. Just after two days, we can't imagine hand-held work without it. The mount allows you swivel up and down as well as position the EVF exactly where you want it - forward/back and up/down by engaging two separate brakes. Add a longer dovetail to the EVF and you could extend the viewfinder up and out even further. The final production model may also include the ability to move horizontally as well which would be great. The clutch feels just right - easy enough to adjust when you need to but otherwise locked in tight for the ride until you decide to make a change.

Here our some pictures of the mounts in action . Please note that these are not the final production versions, the part of the mount attached to the top cheese plate (another cool Element creation) is not final.

That would be ideal for Hand Held mode, what about Studio mode? Are or will there provisions to attach an Eye Piece Leveler?

    THat looks great.

Question though, is that setup a 15mm arri plate, and if so, is that a 15mm universal mount the cradle is mounted on?

I have one on order. Can't wait. Of course I need my EVF to show up as well! ;)
Stephen at ET indicated that there may be a forthcoming way to mount to a head for traditional (non-hunched-over) operating on a dolly or tripod. I'm hoping for something that goes right on the O'Connor leveler bracket or an Arrihead leveler post.
It would be great to avoid the extreme tilt acrobatics a non-leveled eyepiece or onboard monitor creates.
    Cheers,
    Harry

ET has great designs and manufactures to a very high standard. Former AC's + Modern Machine shop = Killer combination.

I've messed about with the EVF bracket and the clutch is great just the right amount of friction. Fore / Aft and UP / Down adjust a sensible amount and lock firmly in place. The EVF is quite big and heavy and it's brought under total control. If you are getting an EVF (and you should) you'll most likely need one of these...

The top cheeseplate allows for some clever ways to mount your batteries with a low CG and out of the way. Transverse? Low on the dummy side? No problem.

Do you have to have the top cheese plate to mount it or could you put it on a rod? Part of the deal with handheld (to me) is keeping the rig as light as possible. Ideally there'd be a way to mount the ET EVF mount straight to RED... like say to the RED top handle.

The ET guys are working on something, the bracket between the top cheese and EVF is temporary. Not sure
how it will attach but I trust them to come up with something good.

By the way the top cheese only looks heavy - you'd be surprised. It's been seriously dug out on the back side
and of course it has a bonanza of threaded holes.
