People who rent out cameras plus themselves for $500 a day are setting an industry standard. This expecially goes for Scarlet camera owners. I see these guys popping up all over the place since Scarlet was released. They buy a scarlet and then start renting it out for dirt cheap so they can make back there $15k. This is only one of the reasons why our film industry is suffering. Where we're these guys when film was still being shot??

    Jon,

Sorry to say but producers and productions don't care about customer service and support
anymore. Your company just did a job in Oklahoma city for a client of mine which you supplied yourself as the DIT and your camera for dirt cheap. I'm sure they didn't hire you b/c you gave them great customer service and support. That was all about getting a camera locally at the last minute for the cheapest price possible.

The whole "You get what you pay for" argument aside, which is the most obvious and also the only argument that matters in it. People in a free market can set their own price, and should be free to conduct legal business as they see fit, and as suits their own economy.
You may not like it, it may cut into the way you like to do business, but I'm sure you'd hate people taking to forums talking about over-inflated rental costs designed to take advantage of filmmakers in areas where Red rentals are few and far between - which does go on just as much as the percieved under-valuing of rental prices for Scarlet and Epic packages.

Worrying that people who are trying to make a living with their camera are called 'bottom-feeders' and said to not know the value of the product they sell.

No man, your wrong. My company did not provide dit and my camera for dirt cheap. First of all it's none of your business, and second of all. The dit guy was a friend of mine and I was doing him a favor by going out there and bringing my camera, and only making $800 that day instead of the standard $1000 that I charge for my epic. Also it wasn't in Oklahoma city. I hate it when people point fingers first instead of asking questions first. Those are the real bottoms feeders.

And secondly, I will never rent to them again, but that's none of your business either.

You mean that the film industry is suffering from lower production costs and a greater supply of cameras...? Explain?

I think some of the guys where still in high school when film was shot, needless to say, I do not think they will sit around with their new bought camera on the shelf, they will go out there and try to make any coin they can off that Skate/surf film camera that they just bought. I believe that looking back and wishing to get the 3k USD/day basic camera pack rentals prices back will not do much good. It's the same digital revolution that swiped trough the music industry, some dinosaurs not willing to change will be flushed out for sure.

Well, as I recall and as I currently see it, the "digital revolution" basically destroyed the music industry to the point that the primary and often only source of significant income to musicians today is live performance. Recording is no longer a source of income, it's basically PR for the live performances. So destroying an industry is probably not the example one might want to use here.

Of course Tom. Sorry for calling you a bottom feeder. Sometimes I am my own worst enemy. Those guys that rented from me asked for the brain only, and me being new in this whole rental game didn't realize that I was the one at fault for not providing ala cart gear for them from the get go. I did end up bringing all of my gear out there though. So now were envoicing them for ala cart items that I had to have to make the brain even work.
