My plan has worked well so far, paying off 30,000 worth of gear in three months time.

Never announce public rates. Distinguish yourself through passionate commitment to the job: setting up the package for exactly what they need, subrenting if need be. Fix on set issues or mistakes with lightning speed--I once sent a courier to Liberty Island with a new redmag reader. Replaced before client needed to download.

Man this is cheap......& you know what..... I still wouldn't use it. Sure camera hire maybe, but not the brain behind the camera brain, forget it.....and I'm a producer.

However I don't see a problem with this strategy if it is like the digital printer business model, sucker them in with a cheap day rate then load up the charges with extras.....like "sure transcoding easy" $200 an hour...."digital offload /rushes' "no problem" $100 per SSD/per reel and you just know they are going to shoot some insane shoot ratio like 50 to 1. 1st light Color correction "man have you seen how much colourists charge, I'll do it for $150 per SSD". Digital archiving "easy" cheap at $50 per SSD. per HD .

Whilst I understand the general reaction of the rate quoted....maybe........ just maybe the O.P can make it in this cut throat industry....so in 10 years from now he can bemoan all these kids doing productions at no charge.

P.S. I also remember a similar reaction with Red One owners "what a camera that shoots cinema images for less than Sony digital Betacam what a con & how unprofessional ! ". ; )

too many cameras in the wrong hands

what sucks is this is one voice and there's probably more just like this.

I'm blessed to have gotten a Scarlet at 2011 price but there have been some disappointment when I hear what people charge and how fast this camera has depreciated in the indi world.

sometimes I wish the BMC would have been released before the Scarlet to prevent this from happening.

I'm one of them but there's a ton of us who have jumped from DSLR-to-RED and old clients still expect DSLR prices.

I've had to turn down old clients cause they wanted to pay $300 for the camera and me for a day, then a few days ago I got a call to DP a 25 day feature with Scarlet for $400, my jaw has been on the ground the past month. Whats also crazy is I know those jobs got filled. Like said above if there's no insurance your setting yourself up for the worst.

I can't afford to feed their cheap scams, especially if your work/gear is better than the average shooter.

Respect your peers, Respect yourself/work, Respect your Gear

There's nothing wrong with selling your Scarlet and buying a BMC, Media, Lens, Tripod, Shoulder, LapTop for $10k you can start a business have all the tools to get the job done prob have some left over for next's months rent cause you did a month job for peanuts.

Build the skills and clients then the camera.

I could see there being a ton of 4K Scarlets in the future that become the indi-standard due to price practicality at this rate.

A serious business has rates that covers all the stuff that you need to survive on the long run, otherwise it is suicide. It is that simple.

The best part is that he said he's removed his rates from the post but its still in the title.

No one will come back to you after paying rock bottom rates when you suddenly raise them no matter what stipulations you make. They know you will work for that rate, the reason is irrelevant. They will just go find the next rock bottom rate and all you got were rentals at ridiculous prices with negative margin.

its called capitalism , its why sony can't charge 250k for a camera anymore - every one wants it brought down to a level they can afford but no further as they wouldn't actually want to have to compete much for business. consensus pricing is called price fixing and its illegal behaviour

Thats what I do here in NYC... had a camera fail on set last weekend... went myself with a new camera, tore down the set up they had and put the new one in its place so they didn't loose any time, and then stayed there incase they had really bad luck and the camera went down again.

People don't just like renting gear to use it.. the like renting gear knowing that they'll be getting solid support behind the rental.
