The writing has been on the wall for a at least a year, Apple is going no where with the Mac pro market.
It just that all macpro users are have been having a hard time excepting it.

But I still believe and hope.

Today's announcement was certainly a setback. No question about it. The appearance is that Apple is abandoning the professional. No 17" Mac Book Pro and no real new Mac Pro are signals that will shake the core of the Apple professional.

But I don't believe this is the end. My bet is that Apple is just taking a bit more time to get it right. I spent several years in Apple purgatory when Steve was gone and Sculley (and others) completely screwed up Apple. I expect this moment in time to be just another brief moment in Apple purgatory.

There are lots of smart guys at Apple. Too smart to give up the professional. Professionals are the front row. They influence the "rest". Apple gets this.

My bet (and I have no inside knowledge whatsoever) is that Apple is feverishly working on a Mac Pro with full 4K graphics support, USB3 and Thunderbolt, along with a new 17" (or greater) Mac Book Pro.

If I am wrong, Apple clearly knows the consequences. I just don't think that Apple is ready to give up what they have worked so hard to achieve... the loyal support of the professional.

    Jim

I hope you are right...because they do like the sales of those little devices they sell to the masses.

Companies that have the passionate support of their customers, to the extent that the customers are willing to put stickers of the companies logo on their most prized possessions, says a tremendous amount about the company.

Think about how rare that is. ( and think how incredibly rare it is that Jim did it twice )

Apple used to be like that. Really. You used to see people drive around with that little white apple sticker that you would get with a new mac on the back of their car , and being a mac user even seeing that on some other car you would feel kinda proud.

I haven't seen a new one of those little stickers placed on a car for awhile.. nor had that proud feeling.

I just want those days to come back.
Hmm, interesting perspective, never thought of it like this!

And then I look down next to me and see that I did this like 3 yrs ago :-)

Agree with your opinion Jim, and with the introduction of this Macbook Pro i feel more confident in the future. To me it seems like theis Macbook Pro its employing the very best things we like about Apple- performance, design, integration. By using less 3rd party parts it really allowed them to make a leap in laptop design, in my view. And it looks very "pro" oriented. Not so sure about the sd card slot and if that isn't taking the place of, for example, an optical audio input or pcie slot space, but 2 thunderbolt and 2 usb3 slots cover this odd design choice somehow. Will Adobe CS6 and Red Cine X take advantage of those extra pixels for an updated "Retina" Preview? i've just ordered one of those and would be great to see and edit my red footage in its almost 3K glory...

heh heh love you Shawn... now you know just how much you putting that sticker there means to us.

Remember.. true story... Jim and I used to hand make every sticker we sold on RED.com while we were waiting for the Red One to show up.

    Seriously.

He would line the big roll of 3m paper on the plotter and print each one out and then cut each one and i would laminate them, we would do that in the middle of the night, each and every week as we waited for some code to cook or some hardware to come out of the oven. Pretty Crazy.

So all of you that have those old stickers, there was ALOT of love put into each and every one of them.

Unfortunately, FCPX was an early indication of whats to come and the fact that they didn't rectify that bad move soon after the echoed complaints it became clear where the future of apple resides; in the pockets of their i-consumer. And here we are and as much as we refuse to accept it.... it is the beginning of the end, and it started with the breadcrumb tower upgrade to give us thread of hope, followed by the untimely death of the 17"... I will miss you 17" *pour drink on the ground.

Its time to move on to a new pro laptop... perhaps a RED one? *wink, wink :-)
