  1. #1 REDCODE at 2K questions
I first thought that since I was shooting 2K which I presume was less data, I could get away with the same redcode ratio or even higher ratio to save on space on the SSD. But upon reviewing the footage it seems that unless I shoot 2K at 7:1 I get compression artifacts that are not good. I dont mean a thing where some people would say its usable and others not, it just generally seems like youtube-y during high detail moments etc…

So I'm kind of answering my own question here but I still would love to hear from someone at RED, what is the deal when shooting at 2K, do you need to use even less compression because it's actually more difficult for the camera or something since it's zooming in on the sensor and thus noisier by default so to combat that do you need less compression? I don't know how to wrap my head around it.

*** Also I'm assuming shooting Redcode 5:1 at 2K still takes up less space than shooting 10:1 in 4K, am I correct in this assumption?

You are zooming in on defects, so they show more. Shoot 5:1

In super high speed slomo, it is quite obviously not using the same algorythm, so there are many more artifacts.

Hopefully this will get better in future firmware updates.

Compression ratio and data are not the same. 6:1 is 6:1 ratio, whether in 1K or 5K.

    On a 64gb card:

    4K 10:1 = 39.3 minutes
    2K 5:1 = 76.34 minutes

so far in my experience i would not shoot 3K at lesser quality than 7:1

i think 6 or 5:1 is better though if you have the space

(when i do 3k or 2k its usually documentary style project so i'm always trying to save as much space as possible.. if your doing feature stuff or commercial etc you can probably go for highest quality
