    Hi,

We are in the middle of a shoot. I'm trying to find a way to watch the footage (Epic 5K) and make a rough cut without using prores conversions because our time is very limited.

Isn't it possible like Red One 4K or 4,5K files: create proxies via redcine and use the lowest proxy for watching and simple editing?
Is there any way to avoid prores and do this directly?

Any help will be appreciated !!!

Download the trial of Premiere and start watching instantly. Basics of straight cut editing are a snap to learn, though Premiere is still missing a lot of deeper edit tools, imo. Good luck.

By the way if it is important, the footage is REDcode 7:1 and the computer is a macbook pro.

Thank Kevin! Does it mean there is no way to do this kind of a simple job with fcp 7 or fcp pro x?

For right now there is no way. FCPx should be coming out with native r3d support in the near future

With Redcine X you can create quicktime wrappers. Like the _m _p etc... proxies you used to have in the Redone.

You can batch create them and it takes seconds. Then you can use them in final cut. Performance I must say it's not very good, but if you play with different options I tried something like using the lowest resolution proxy in a 720p sequence, I was able to play back without almost drop frames. It's not ideal, but it works. Then you can reconform to the Raw latter with Redcine X or clipfinder conform xml options.

I know it sucks as I have never done transcodes with my Redone, and now unless you use premier (which you need an Nvidia card, otherwise in my case I get even worse performance that FCP7 proxy playback), there is not much you can do but use these proxies and find the best setting in FCP7 to edit quickyly or transcode.

Also mention that if you just want to see footage, Redcince X pro, is you best option. It preloads, which is great and now you can even double click the r3d and will open a player. Which is great.

So bottom line. For EPIC/Scarlet footage. Un less you use Premmier, you need to have RedcineX pro installed to either view those r3d files or create the quicktime wrapper (proxies)

You can use Redcine X to create QuickTime proxies which will playback in FCP X.

On my macbookpro (8.3), RCXp creates very usable offline files (1/2 debayer 1080 ProresLT) pretty fast
    1h of 4K r3d transcodes in 2h
