But why youtube and why such a poor quality encode? Apple trailers generally look so much better....

Wow! No lack of beautiful mysterious shots in this trailer! Each one the work of a master... The art direction here is looking pretty good!

No anamorphic, Mr. Deakins doesn't seem to be a fan of it. It's the Studio because he wanted the optical viewfinder.

That's the same encode as the YouTube one with the low vertical resolution (looks like upscaled) and masses of aliasing and terrible compression artifacts. What's the point of releasing a trailer in such a sub-standard way?

To get it out to the masses and spread the word, build hype and recoup their money back and make some money while they are at it.
Same reason you can watch films on a plane with a crappy LCD screen. = make money

I'm just comparing/contrasting with the quality of trailers I've seen recently - even the compression I can understand, but the low-to-high resolution upsample to fake 1080p is just ludicrous. I guess I'm an image quality snob.

the 1080p quicktimes look slightly better to me, but maybe I'm just tired and my eyes cannot tell the difference.
Hopefully a better encode wil appear on the Apple trailers website soon.

The 1080p version is up at Apple and it looks stunning. I know that Arri does not get much love over here but I must say that the footage coming out of that new Alexa Studio is superb. I am not sure how much of a difference that spinning shutter makes but it looks fantastic to my eyes. What do you guys think?

"Touched by a masterpiece, a person begins to hear in himself that same call of truth which prompted the artist to his creative act. When a link is established between the work and its beholder, the latter experiences a sublime, purging trauma."- Andrei Tarkovsky
