11mm at 5k would be a challenge. Our latest BX4 rig is very compact and lightweight but current minimum (*tested*) fl is 16mm at 4k. The mirror box is 14" wide, and we have yet to do any testing on this rig with Angenieux 16-42 lens hoods removed. This would allow us to get much closer to the mirror, and might give us 16mm at 5K (what is that equivalent too? 14mm?). Certainly a wider and taller mirror box would give you more, but as you've suggested it starts to get out of control pretty quickly. The predecessor, BX3.5 has a 19" mirror box which, while considerably larger, isn't unwieldy. Unfortunately the mirror boxes aren't currently interchangeable. BX4 mark II coming any day now, should be right around 12.5lbs bare.

Well, I guess I should have thought this out a bit more before ordering and receiving the rear SSD : Now I have no LCD on the eye with the rear SSD ;(
For some reason, I had in my mind that the rear SSD module also took care of the LCD connector relocation as well.
Twelve hundred buck for a module that probably has no active components inside, plus 300 for another plate to make it fit. Now no LCD.
Should I return all these rear SDD bricks and make my own extension cable for the existing SSD side, or should I get an HDMI monitor and hope I can see problems with that mis-matched screen ?
    hmmmm.

I did exactly that and it cost me 4 months of R&D and $5k to manufacture the cable. How is it cheaper?

Well, I'm not sure where you had trouble. Was is making a custom connector, or some other mechanical issue ?
I'm not recognizing the connector style, but maybe it is available somewhere.
You said you had some help from Red. Perhaps I can call on them to give me some pointers.
I understand if you won't divulge info, mate.

I just am bummed that they didn't add the lcd connector. Am I supposed to buy another $1200 gadget for that ?

    1. Finding the exact connector (there are approximately 110,000 different connectors available from a number of companies): 3 months
    2. Ordering the connectors to ensure that they are matching: $200
    3. Finding suitable cable that would provide reliable signal transmission: 1 month
    4. Design the final cable assembly for the manufacturing
    5. Minimum quantity of the special cable approximately: $3k - $4k
    6. Minimum run of 15 cable assemblies at about $200 each, which are then QA tested, plus international shipping, etc...

I'm not sure how you could make it less expensive or less time consuming. Given enough quantity, I could potentially sell them at $1k - $2k each.

However, I think the Monitor Adapter Module (not yet available) + Rear SSD are still going to be cheaper even if you want to set up 10 units.

Also, the ribbon edge connector is not designed to be used as an external connector and can not take any mechanical force. In my application, the entire assembly is mounted inside an underwater housing and not exposed to cable strain. I wouldn't use it as an external solution subjected to user handling.

Shooting 3D with kids at Camp RED we dealt with upside down footage and the need to flip the right eye horizontally as well. The kids didn't care and it was easy enough to mount the RED LCDs upside down on the rig, which was done by the 3Ality guys. Their on-set monitoring flips and rotates each feed and there was live monitoring in 3D on an LG 46" 3D panel with passive glasses. In post it was quick and easy to flip/flop the clips in Premiere. We also had a plugin that is on double-secret-probationary don't talk about it status that does a lot of work for you and that made it easier to instantly set up anaglyphic mode for the kids to view in the post lab and to adjust convergence or other things.

Hopefully we'll get the flip features in the camera soon.

Some 3D rigs do allow for the EPIC/ Scarlet to be mounted so the images remain right side up. The 3Ality rig we used at Camp RED would allow for it too, it just wasn't set up that way. Remember, if you have the right bits and pieces you can mount the cameras via their top rather than the bottom and the DSMC brains are small enough to fit in many rigs when oriented that way. Right side up still doesn't account for the horizontal flip needed for the camera receiving the mirrored image though.

True - but - for those of us using touch screens for camera control as well as viewing what we're shooting, on rigs that need the cameras mounted upside-down, vertical flip is mission critical. Horizontal flip (aka flop) remains very high on the nice-to-have list!

Has it happened yet, thought it was coming out in the last build.

Haven't had time to update as of yet or even read to see if it was in the last build.
