Well, you just said that, you are not sure, but I am... ;)
REDRAY Projector it is a superior product, and what it offers is also far more innovative and superior to the SOny product, which I love, but there is not a chance I'll continue to use a Sony system once the RED system is ready.
Also don't forget that I do have first hand on some things before they even hit the market, (NOT THE CASE HERE... Yet) but I know what I know, and it is sufficient to draw my opinion, I'm not stating it as a FACT, we each will choose our own system either way, I have chosen mine a little early... Or have I chosen a little early?
BTW Felix, wanted to say this in the prior reply to you, but I'll say it now... I absolutely love SINGAPORE, and will be there again soon, to see it much changed I know I'll not find my way around any more, as it has become an incredible place... ;)
Amongst other specs.
Can someone clarify the whole lens thing with the red projector?
IDK much about projectors but do I understand correctly that you could put any lens mount on the front of the Redray and mount any lens and project through it? As projector lenses can be quite expensive this seems like it would be a great savings. OTOH aren't all projector lenses fixed aperture? I am confused by the picture of the RPP on the laser projector.
That ability to exchange mounts and lenses has me wondering what limits, if any, there are to projecting content through the Red Projector. Can we have home Cinemascope with proper framing and lens matching? Will we someday be able to stream a movie in the aspect ratio of our choice!?
What most are not seen here is that the REDRAY Projector is not just an other 4k projector, which also happens to do 3D... Its way more!!
AFAIK the Sony VPL-1000ES projector is limited to 4K (4096 x 2160) at 23.98fps and QuadHD (3840 x 2160) at 29.97fps. I don't have the spec in front of me but IIRC the choice of a single HDMI 1.4a port for interconnect caps the bandwidth/refresh rate as noted. Perhaps they have already gone to a second gen unit with different input options?
FWIW, Sony actually shipping and selling 4K "home" projectors in 2012 is both a welcome step forward in the road to 4K and, perversely, a unit frozen in time by its bandwidth limitations. Perhaps there is a way to upgrade the interface I don't know about, but if not, it would seem like the poster child for the planned obsolescence Jim found so frustrating that it helped motivate him to start RDC. If I could get a full purchase price credit on the next iteration of the 1000ES (ala R1 to EpicX) I'd buy one today. Since (AFAIK) such a credit is not offered and knowing that S3D, HFR and greater bit-depth are on the horizon I just can't see spending more than $20K for a rig that will be worth $5K on eBAY in 2 years. Just saying'

Laser light source, not scanned raster laser beam like on the laser pico projector.
High powered beam projectors are illegal due to eye saftey concerns.
Still , $10K is fantastic. I hope they get the contrast improved, the prototype showed lifted black levels, but I'm certain better optics can improve that, as LCOS is known for great blacks.
I'm not going to buy SONY or RED projector in near future, but
SONY is in stock now here http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Vpl-vw100.../dp/B0077R5KXG
When will be RED projector in stock?
