There's nothing to stop a theater from showing a closed-circuit exhibition of 8K. 8K doesn't have to be broadcast, as long as there's a way to shoot it, edit it, color-correct it, and deliver it.

The DOPs that had 4k DCP in Cannes decided to show it in 2k because 4k was too sharp...

8k will be great for live events, sports, concerts, racing. It could be great for outdoors displays and giant screens, as well as stadiums. However, for filmmaking the impact might be less noticeable, unless for IMAX screens, in my humble opinion. The next revolution should be in dinamic range (hdrx is the first giant step), low light performance and best, efficient raw compression.
