I recently finished a short film shot on Epic, and I am currently looking to shoot more projects going forward on RED, though my main concern going forward is the fan noise levels of the Epic.
On the post production end of things, what software/tools do you all prefer to use for selectively reducing the Epic`s fan noise from your audio recordings, or do you surround the camera with blankets and such to muffle the fan noise on set?
I would prefer to make the fan noise on set as inaudible as possible, as I believe audio patch work in post can be helpful, but should not be used as a cop out to not get clear quality recordings on set.
On my last short I used a mixture of iZotope RX2 and Audacity for audio sweetening. I found that it worked pretty well, though I was not 100% happy with it, as I still ran into a few moments of artifacts along the way, even with very careful settings. And eventually had to resort to splicing word for word in some instances to avoid artifacts, which grew rather tedious quickly.
And even with EQ filtering, found that I never able to give the actors voices the amount of presence that I felt, due the Epic fan drowning out a fair amount of intricacies in the actor`s voice, especially on close ups.
My next script involves some very quiet/intimate dialogue scenes and I am a bit worried about shooting those scenes on RED.
I had been considering shooting this next project on a friend`s Red One + Birger mount, with canon lens. Does the R1 have a lower fan noise level than the Epic, while recording? I believe we were running at 35% speed on the Epic fans.
Any insight/experiences on the matter would be much appreciated.
