Given the interest in the BM Camera and how many users are saying they are going to invest in one I think it's fair to say it will affect Scarlet Sales.

    Unless !

Red resurrects the interchangeable Scarlet 2/3 - 4/3 with Raw Capability and Pro Res / DNxHD for 3-6K Including basic accessories. (Monitor /SSD / 1.8" Station / Side Handle / 2 Batteries + Charge / BasePlate )

Can this be done ? Is this possible ? Who knows ? Most of the work has been done, and Jim has often stated that everything changes.
Can Red produce a 2/3 - 4/3 Camera at this price point and still make a profit ? Or will they just stick with the Scarlet and Epic as is ?
If they do can they be sure they wont loose ground and sales to BM ?

Any announcement has gotta be before the Blackmagic Camera Ships in June / July otherwise these sales are lost and so are the customers.
In this market (price range) I reckon the majority of people buying the camera will have enough money for one purchase only.

One thing is sure if Blackmagic Ships this camera in quantity it's going to take a huge bite out of the 3-10K (Dollar)
    Camera market.

Things are definitely moving quickly, hang on to your seats.

    My 2 Cents

Ray, the one thing to keep in mind is that the camera hasn't shipped yet, very few people have used it, and probably even fewer people have actually used it on a real gig. No doubt they will sell a ton of these but I believe RED knows their market and it's based in the 4k+, 35mm sensor size world. No matter how you slice and dice it, the BM camera is not a 4K camera, and it has a crop factor that isn't equivalent to super 35mm. If it was, then RED would have more of a problem on their hands.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people bought a BM camera as a B-Cam to their Scarlet. Win-win for everyone. :-)

I agree with you in some respects Steve, however once the camera is of a certain quality (and all reports point to a clean Image and good DR, much better than current DSLR's) I don't think this will matter.
Those people looking at Sony, Canon or Red Cameras as their entry into Digital Cinema (Raw) and Corporate work will rush to this product.

Red may very well choose to stick with the 4K 35mm sensor market and not compete at this price point, who knows ? but the fact still remains money will be taken out of this market segment,
and less money spent on other cameras.

I guess this comes back to my original question "Can this market sustain all these cameras, or will something have to give"
Personally give the current economic climate I cannot see this market segment investing in two different cameras, I may be wrong here
but if the Blackmagic Camera sells in quantity I think it will affect Scarlet Sales.

As a recovering Leica bigot, having invested in Canon lenses for my Scarlet-X, I will be all over the BlackMagic Camera for a B-Cam. I will also expect RED to buttress its long-term relationship with its customers by improving the price/performance ratio of the Scarlet system through offering an appropriate upgrade path. I am especially hopeful of a full range of accommodations for Leica M, R, and S lenses within the scope of the DSMC concept. I do not expect RED to compete with BMC directly, in view of its opportunity costs of moving down-market.

The 16mm/s16mm/2/3" sized formats have existed and thrived alongside the 35mm formats for decades. They are more practical for some uses than S35. That said the BMC is neither fish nor fowl. S16mm glass won't cover it so you don't get the major advantage of compact fast wide range high quality zooms that come with the smaller formats and it won't have major appeal for the uber shallow DOF crowd.
I am looking toward the Digital Bolex. For a hobby cam it is workable for both standard and S16mm lenses, has a more practical form factor and interchangeable lens mounts. It offers a range of frame rates at different crops with a global shutter CCD, no rolling shutter issues. It records to SD format off the shelf media buffered by a 256GB internal SSD. I'm interested in a raw solution, Prores and DNXHD aren't relevant to me since I have never used either format.
I don't expect Red to do so, but if they would release the interchangeable lens version of the 3k 2/3" Scarlet with a PL mount, original frame rates and all, for a sub $5k brain price I would be all in. Thank you Red for introducing me to raw motion cameras. I'm hooked. I'm over video.

    100% with you on that.

It's the perfect little friend for a whole lot of what I'll be doing- crazy almost crash cam stuff, tying it to a car and driving @ 60mph through the desert, etc.

Looking forward to cutting it in with MX footage and delivering @ 2K.

I think cameras like this will only fuel the fire for more RAW and more resolution, boosting RED sales. Its good all around. We preordered one, so I'm excited to try it out.

This forum is full of people who were waiting 3K for 3K Scarlet.
RED is the PC of cinema world. Most powerful, most customizable and most freedom.

I like the whole distribution thing. There are already Germany-based resellers listed where I will be able to go and spend my money. No customs hassle etc. And regular SSDs instead of the INSANELY expensive custom RED SSDs.

I'm selling my 7D and getting one of these. I was going to buy DaVinci anyway so that's a steal. I get a B-Cam to my Scarlet, and a camera I'm not affraid to mount on a remote control Heli. I can use it with the cheaper steadicam rigs. I could see lot's of advantages to using this camera. Will it affect RED sells, I think yes. There is an enormous market who wanted the Scarlet but couldn't afford it, they will more than likely buy the BMD cam. Then there are those who are on the fence to buying a Scarlet who may opt for the BMD cam also.
