I'm thrilled beyond belief that we're about to get new resolution options in addition to 120fps at 1k. RED is being rather cryptic, on all fronts, about what the update will feature exactly, but I will say that any of the following will be awesome: 4k 48fps, 4k hdrx 24fps, 5k 24fps. I think we all want 5k @ 24fps, especially those of us coming into the RED world from a 5D Mark II, where our 17mm lens is super wide. Also, 5k is closer to 4k resolution when debayered, though I didn't want to get to technical in this post.

    Any other predictions or wants?

In a GOD sake tell me WHERE we can use ONE K footage? Even with 120FPS. It is a funny joke like VGA video on top notch DSLR'S.

JIM please discard everything below 3K. Forever.

    +1 (for me, personally)

but on the other hand: if it comes to reality, we are not forced to use it.
and if someone wantes to use it ( think of a picture in picture ) can be happy with this feature.

i know, there are a lot of voices here, which are singing: if you want 120 - buy an epic.

    but.

there are a lot of people here, they canīt afford an epic. so, 120 fps might be helpful for a lot of people.
itīs not fair to say: donīt make it, because i donīt need it.

there are a lot of other people, they might need it...

My main use for 1k footage will be for green screening. By rotating the camera, then green screening that vertical, it should work perty good, even in a 4k background. I have some scenes where i need to get moving strings of a cello, where I'm hoping to use that technique. I know this is slightly junky, from a epic viewpoint, but I think will look cinema quality in a 2k dcp.

Green screen compositing of 1K elements into your 2-4k footage.

Green screen a seperate motion element and lay it on top. Think slow motion elements layered on top of "normal" motion-mixed time in the same frame!

That's my take, or of course stuff intended for 720p compressed web/vimeo/mobile targets.

5k 24fps would be awesome but I really don't see it coming for MX, with Dragon maybe.

I don't think getting rid of everything under 3k is a good idea... for the time being 2k is still relevant, and for people who need 60fps 2k is still a great option.

Also, I can say with 99.999% accuracy that we will not see 5k 24fps, or 4k 48fps on scarlet with out Dragon.

120 fps at 1k is a novelty, and actually the more I think about it, I can't imagine to what purpose I would personally use this?

@Louis, why are these not a possibility? Think about it, we can have 3k at 48fps and hdrx 24fps. Now, if they figure out 4k hdrx at 24fps that would also mean that 4k at 48fps is possible…. and therefore 5k at 24fps would be possible. Again, I say possible, because although they could technically do it, why would they? Which, I think is the argument that you're presenting.
