  1. #1 Data Recovery For R3d files
Not sure if this is the correct place for this thread... I had an external drive crash and have to do data recovery. I took it initially to someone that ran some recovery software. I was able to find and recover all other video formats (quicktime, h264, etc), but can't seem to recover r3d files. The software converted the r3d files to swf files for some reason and when I change the extension back to r3d, redcine x says the file is offline if I try and open it.

I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience with recovering a failed drive with red footage on it and has any recommendations.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Red should be able to help you. Or your data recovery people could try running Red's free RedUnDead program on the drive. Any recovery software has to be able to recognise a file format to know what it looks like to recover it. Standard data recovery software won't recognise a proprietary format like R3D, and probably won't correctly reconstruct your R3Ds.

Just to follow up, I did indeed use redundead and it worked like a charm. Recovered all my r3d files. Thanks again for the tip!

Will Redundead work with a perfectly good external drive that had the .r3d files deleted?

In Redcine-x pro, I deleted the R3Ds from the Browser Project window, apparently this deletes the R3D files from the hard drive! Not knowing this I emptied the recycle bin.

Now I'm trying to get those R3d files back, the external drive works fine, it has not been reformatted, corrupted, or written to since the files were deleted.

I tried REDundead using this in the terminal redundead /dev/rdisk5 /Users/admin/Desktop/REDundead/

As soon as I press enter, I get "Done!" with no files recovered.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Steve,

I'm not sure I understand, should I type "sudo" before I enter the command in the terminal?

    So,

    sudo redundead /dev/rdisk5 /Users/admin/Desktop/REDundead/

my advise to anyone dealing r3ds.. buy a copy of r3d data manager if you don't get on with the shell, it has a user interface for redundead.. if the files were on your install drive.. don't install any software (ie r3d data manager) just carry on using the shell.. and turn off any automated stuff that might use the hard drive.. good luck everyone
