I would love to see RED offer a module that would send a data stream over fiber to a decoder box (RedRayPro?) that could process and display live 4K images with less than 1/50th of a second latency. Would be a terrific I-mag option, immersive environment element, etc. Just hoping...

That was going to be part of the RED ONE options many moons ago. I still think it's a great idea for specific uses.

By the way, Jim — can we expect a new firmware release corresponding with the start of NAB?

That will probably happen when the technology has moved on to the point where 4k is on a par with today's 1080p.

The saddest thing about all that, is just when you look at the footage these F65/Epic/Alexa owners are doing. Just a pain for the soul, as I like to say. I can't believe that some dads are filming their kids with an Epic and, furthermore, are so proud to showcase it on the Shot on Red section ;-)

    Rant over ;-)

i think many of those dads are just looking for an excuse to show off their kids under the guise of showing off their camera. '-):

Or it just may be that like me, they have other cameras but never reach for them after receiving their Epic or Scarlet. By my count, I have 6 digital non-red motion capture cameras. Since receiving my first R-1, I just have not turned them on. I sold one camera, a Canon XL-1 for about a quarter of its original value, but these others would not be worth the trouble of selling. Plus, they require a certain software to open their footage as their workflow is proprietary and not mainstream enough to warrant other NLEs to open them, and in the case of the old Mini DV tapes, I need those cameras to look at footage on my newer computers, should I ever wish to do so.

I understand your rant, however. It has been a financial battle for me to get here and I have sacrificed much (or at least a normal person would call it sacrifice, To me it is just the new normal) to be able to own RED cameras. But one thing that gives me great satisfaction. My two Epic X cameras will never join those other six obsolete cameras laying around just gathering dust. And I fully believe these will be the last camera bodies I will ever have to buy.
One camera is a shoot... two or more is a production.

If the rumors of the C500 is true, I guess we finally have two competing cameras - at least in terms of image quality. It will be interesting to see how our tools of trade will develop from here on :)

Seems that Kodak has re-designed the C300 with state of the art specs... ;)

Edit: Being German, I still prefer this C300.

All these companies are just protecting their high-profile clients, Red included.

Kristen, I am sorry but this is offbase. No one is entitled to cameras. Those "Pros" you speak of have worked really hard to be able to afford them.

I want a bigger house, so my kids have more space to play, I can have bigger offices, my wife can have a bigger art studio, etc. We have to work really hard to achieve that. No one is going to start selling us big houses for dirt cheap just because we really want one and feel our lives would be better off because of it.

The prices of cameras have come way down. 6 years ago, many of us would not be here discussing owning this level of camera. Let's be thankful the prices are reasonable.

And by the way, I'm a bit offended by the tone of parents filming their kids with RED cameras. Yes, I have done that and I'm very happy I did. My daughter's early years are in archive quality media format. I don't apologize for that. I'm fortunate that it worked out that way.
