So in summary exporting from RCX 2048 MPEG4 at 32 Mbit per second is the best for iPad3.

Second best is making 1920 x 1080p H.264 at 15MBits/sec but we need to watch what we use to export it from. May produce Moire.
RCX will export from RAW so it will debayer perfectly smooth.
However taking it from already exported to 2048 and than making it into 1920 I will not do.

So again, keeping RAW originals at 5K is wise thing to do, you never know what you will have to export it to.
We may end up with QHD screens having 3840 pixels horizontal, I hope this standard will never happen.

I will test iPad3 playing 2048 sample to Sony Bravia 65" via ApleTV box connected to Bravia via HDMI at 1920

I want to see if ApleTV will accept 2048 and if it will what will happen with 2048 sample with over imposed lines one pixel apart.
Something is going to blew up here...:-)

Wait a second. MP4 and H264 are not mutually exclusive. All of my H264 files are .MP4. Did you mean MPEG4?

Is the following statement correct?: It is possible to encode MPEG4 movies at 2048 resolution and play them in the iPad 3, but it is not possible to encode H264 movies to 2048 and play them in the iPad 3?

I just haven't gotten around to exporting 2k H.264s from Premiere...that probably works. Everything I've gotten to work so far has been MPEG4 rendered out of REDcine-X.

Bill you are not showing the same frame, so it is difficult to compare.
See the bird right center up
Also this frame has a lot off CA.

    MPEG 4 SETTINGS

All the same from above EXCEPT:

    PICTURE:
    Width: 2048
    Height: 1152

    VIDEO:
    Video Codec: MPEG-4 (FFMPEG)

So i went back and looked at each file in CineXplayer and instead of taking screenshots I paused them and looked at it with the magnifying glass. I'll post some screen shots in a couple minutes for comparison.

edit: Might take a little longer for comparison stills, I'll reserve judgement until they're done.

It's pretty difficult to stop CineXPlayer on the same frame of 2 different videos, but these are pretty close. I took the screen shot, added the text and uploaded them. No changes to the images other than that. I'm honestly pretty surprised that the MPEG4 file did this well. If anyone has some 4k source material they'd like to see tested I be glad to take a look.

Justin, actually I see iPad3 is playing the file, but each frame is blank.
It zooms in and out to the frame size with proper proportions. (zoom to the height or zoom to the width is working)
So player is aware of the frame size, and plays each frame.
Again, audio would be playing if you give me the audio like in TimeScapes.
So just codec is not coding any image.
No errors, no quick playing, all is normal except the content of each frame.

Am I correct that using 1920 for the source leads to the iPad upscaling to 2048 during playback which is why feeding it 2048 native is cleaner?

I know the display isn't that big but 1920 with one to one pixel mapping and a little black border might be the slick trick - sure would be nice to make one lower bitrate demo version of a piece at 1920 that you could show on a wide spectrum of devices rather than making a one-off for the iPad3. Or am I missing something?

    Cheers - #19
