I see. iTunes verifies that the resolution of the video is 1920x1080 or less. If it's more, it won't sync with the device (iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new iPad). While the actual device also verifies that also, it's much less picky about what it'll play. So, if you have some above-spec files that you want to play, it's necessary to bypass iTunes.

By the way, iTunes actually supports 2K files. iTunes uses the QuickTime decoder to play videos, so there's no limit in terms of resolution other than the limit of the hardware for playback. (I'm guessing you meant that you doubt iTunes will sync 2K video with iOS devices?)

2560p playback would require a file encoded in H.264 level 5, minimum. At the moment, there's no mobile SoC that supports that level of H.264 decoding. The soonest that anyone will release a tablet capable of playing a video like that will be in either December when Tegra Wayne is released or 2013 when Tegra Grey arrives.

After taking a look at Justins file I have a 2k version of Tom's trailer at 50 megabit up and running with sound on the iPad 3 in CineXPlayer. It looks good but the reason it works is I'm using plain Mpeg4 in Handbrake, not h.264. It works, sure, but I don't think the quality difference is worth it. It's basically super high bitrate Divx at 2048 vs h.264 (x.264/mpeg4 part 10/mpeg4 AVC) at 1920. h.264 just looks better, especially in motion.

    Hope this helps,

    Bill

Are you able to verify that the 2560p file will not play on the new iPad?

2.5k is a corrupted mess, but it does TRY to play it. 2/3rds of the screen is green while 1/3 is just a bunch of random macro blocks.

I'll mess with 2.5k a bit more since I was hoping 4k mpeg4 would work and the oversampling would make up for the lower quality.

If you're able to get even a single frame of the 2.5K file to appear and/or play, it would mean that the hardware in the new iPad is capable of H.264 level 5 decoding. Which, would mean that 3672x1536 at 24 fps playback should also be supported.
