I'm looking to purchase a mattebox for my scarlet package, I'm wondering what people's preferences are.

I've seen some great stuff from chrosziel and Arri along with other companies, but I figured I'd turn to my favorite forum for some input. If you want to post which you prefer and why that'd be great.

Also, I'm interested in a swing away, just seems more practical.

    Cheers,
    Jacob

They are requested from our Hire company often instead of Arri.

Dave, those actually look identical to the Genus Elite mattebox, which is what I've got. I love it.

not sure which is copying which, but either one is a great choice!

ETA: at second glance, maybe not identical, but very similar.

I think TLS manufacture the Genus Matte Boxes. I don't know the tie up between them.

    TLS engineering is first rate.

I had Genus put together an Elite with dual rotating 4x5.65 trays and clamp-on rings for my CP.2s and 70-200... I agree the engineering is fantastic and build quality is awesome.

I had a Redrock before that and absolutely hated it for a number of reasons, but #1 was that the filter trays were worthless. Slide a tray in and if you weren't careful to hold onto it while locking it down, it would slip out the bottom. I broke a few filters because of that thing. The genus has little magnets that hold the tray in place when you slide it into the mattebox, significantly reducing/eliminating the risk of dropping your valuable filters and smashing them to bits.

And come to think of it, I DO remember buying my Genus from TLS now! Oye, why can't everything just be under one name with these companies?

Dont know why there are different names. The guys do a lot of work for Cooke and are highly regarded in our Islands on Optics and accessory manufacturing.

The only thing we had issue with in the past on a hired unit breaking was the actual shade it self when a Yak stood on it. Apparently the client thought it should have with stood that occurrence. Just because the lens and PL mount snapped of the camera at the same time apparently was beside the point.

Yeah I don't expect to encounter any Yaks here in the states, but you never know!

Both of those clamp on directly to the lens correct?

I was inclined toward a swing away, but I may be wrong about that, do you have a reason you prefer these to a swing away setup?

    OCONNOR o-box.
Not swing away but for me it's the best bang for the buck hands down.
